A week tomorrow till my op- am so nervous?!!!

I am due an operation next tuesday to remove a cyst covering my entire left ovary. They are hoping to be able to do it via keyhole but say until they are inside they will not know and there is a high chance it could mean cutting me open properly and removing it that way. They would rather try keyhole first as recovery is a lot quicker.

I am in agony with sharp stabbing pains, twisting/pullung sensation in that side as well as a pernament ache. Have also started to bleed now and again as well, usually when pain is at its worst. Have seen doctor today and she has advised as much rest as possible and to try and avoid any heavy lifting etc.

Everything is set in place. Have everything needed to pack my bag, partner has time booked off work from monday for as long as it takes to recover, my mum is having the girls for a couple of days and will help out at weekends etc.

But just so scared. Wish it was tomorrow as starting to not sleep now and the worst thing is not knowing the type of surgery until after I wake up.

I hate hospitals, suffer severe panic attacks made worse when I am with people I do not know. I only feel comfortable at home so terrified of having to stay at hospital.

Just wanted to know have any people on here had cysts removed and how did it go for you? length of stay in hospital? recovery after?

Thanks

Jester, just wishing you the best. The anticipation is the worst than the reality. Hopefully, others will be able to share their cyst-surgery experiences with you.

You'll be fine. Let us know how it all goes.

poor you jester, 6 years ago I was in the same place as you find yourself now - I was so terrified of going under. Also I experienced the twisting sensation - the ovary twisting due to size of the cyst and bleeding. By the time the cyst and ovary was removed it weighed 6.1lb. Keyhole was not an option due to the size of the cyst. But do you know what? The anticipation was very much the worst part - the op took an hour, i had a catheter for a few days & pca for pain control - was not in pain at all afterwards, was on my feet the next day after surgery and never looked back. My consultant had expected me to be in hospital for 10 days plus but i was out within 6. Felt bit weak for couple of weeks but was up dancing the night away at a friends wedding exactly 3 weeks after the op. I have a very faint scar from pubic bone to navel - my bikini days were behind me anyway & its not noticeable at all.
Now you are beginning to get symptoms from your cyst its for the best that your op is next week.
I had just had DC 3 12 weeks prior to my surgery & I got right back to the business of kiddie care as soon as i got home.
I feel like a hypocrite telling you not to worry when I worried myself sick with my op but honestly, everything was fine. I look back & think - that was the last time I got to stay in bed with people bringing me food, flowers, chocs etc.
You will be fine i am sure - if i had to go through it again I would ham it up a bit post surgery to get a few more days lying in bed reading books.

me too I have endometriosis on ovary and had keyhole/lap to remove worst bit again was I was soooo frightened but everyone was extremely nice, caring and really understanding, could see how nervous I was!

Afterwards took a couple of weeks to recover most painful bit was the pain in my shoulders! They have to sor tof blow your tummy with c2o to get to the bits they want and they remove as much as they can afterwards but some still stays and rises up to the shoulders...I drank lots of mint tea and sat upright for a few days!

Good luck let us know how you get on

are you OK Jester?
From what I have been told the op to remove a cyst is very straightforward. In my case it was true - even given the size of said cyst.
To feel terrified is a natural thing - going under etc
Take nightshirts in your bag - not PJs, cos of the catheter, and cheap big cotton knickers in case it is a laparotomy - then you can just hitch the granny knickers over the incision.
If you suffer panic attacks and are on medication, take it in with you and the nurses will put it in the drugs trolly.
You can get a pre-med prior to going to the anaesthetic room - just to relax you - if you are anything like me you will be spend completely due to nervous engery.
And the staff of Gyne wards in my experience are fab.
You will wake up deviod of the cyst and I bet the last thing you remember is - well I never made 9 in counting backward from 10.
You will be fine xx

Thanks very much for your replies. I was in absolute agony yesterday. It was all in my side- a stabbing pain, twisting and burning sensation. I could also feel it all in my back.

My partner is being very good. He cooked tea yesterday, bathed the girls and put them to bed. I am finding it a struggle picking my 9 month old up as it causes severe sharp pains and a few times I have nearly dropped her Sad

Did any of you find that the pain got more severe if you were doing lots of things like lots of walking, heavy lifting etc as this seem to be when my pains get a lot worse Confused

Think I would be happier knowing what kind of procedure i will end up with,as the not knowing is the worst

I am not actually scared of the procedure itself just how long I will have to stay in hospital after, my safe place is home so will be aimimg to get there asap.

I have been told generally you can go home same day or next day with key hole, and the hospital reckon a 3 night stay if I have to be cut open, though they say depending on recovery.

I had to have surgery after both my girls births as had a third degree tear both times. Each time I had a catheter after. First time for like half a day, and second within 2 hours of being on ward I had it removed and was on my feet etc so I could go home earlier lol

One week today I will be leaving to get to the hospital for 7.45am

are you sure that you dont have some endo aswell as your pain describes mine...that painful you feel as if you are going to pass out with it...I also tend to get it when Ive walked - like this morning to work!

I had to stay in overnight as my baldder was lazy after the lap also the pain in my shoulders was very intense...but felt very safe and was ok about it so dont be too disappointed and be prepared home wise to have an overnight stay

Also remember after the op or before (you will see the surgeon well I did before and after) to ask questions....also I didnt get an after care appt which I hadnt realised I needed so mention that.

Keep us informed

Well have had my operation.Went in yesterday morning for 07.45am.
Went onto ward and had checks etc. Was second on list so taken down to theatre at about 9.40 am.

Cyst was a lot bigger than they expected. Have hole by belly button, 1 on either side and another in middle.

It was more in the centre and over both ovaries which explains a lot of the symptons I was getting.

Was able to go home at 1.30pm after coming round and managing to keep down water, a cup of coffee and a couple of digestives! Also had to have a wee. Was back home by 2.30pm.

Very sore and ina fair amount of pain but have 2 different kinds of painkillers. Just a nightmare to get comfy at moment.

Thanks for all you advice/kind words xxxxxxx
