Tonsilitis

2y9m dd has tonsilitis. She doesn't have a fever, just very inflamed tonsils and slightly swollen glands. I don't think I need to take her to the doctor, or keep her indoors, but I also don't think she should go to nursery or to anywhere where there are lots of children.

Any advice or experience? Am I treating it too lightly (my mum thinks so) or can she even go to nursery if she's up to it? Obviously if she gets worse or it lasts for more than a few days then I'll take her to the GP

Think it usually needs antibiotics. It's nasty. I had mine removed at 23. Can develop into quinsy (sp?), which is very nasty.

I would agree with tinker prob needs antib's - I have suffered with tonsilitis since very very young and i had them removed last year at 28. they refused to take thme out till then saying that they wouls shrink which they never did.

DS has been quite poorly with it recently. He had antibiotics over a week ago but still is not 100%. And has visibly lost weight.

So, more serious than I thought. I shall phone the GP. Thanks.

Yes Tinker - Quincy is horiffic. I had it 2 years ago and was admitted to hospital for 3 days attached to a drip. I have never been so ill.

Up untill then I always thought Quincy was a detective in a wheelchair

It's pus filled cysts on your tonsils that get bigger and bigger, so effectively your throat closes up. I couldn't even swallow a sip of water, so became dehydrated, hence going to hospital for IV fuids and anti B's.

Sorry, I don't mean to hijack, but have had probs with my tonsils for over a year now.

Doc thinks it is M.E. as no infection found, but many many seriously bad tonsilitis type symptoms.

More recently my tonsils have swollen up more than usual and there is a big white flat spot on one side of my throat and on the other, which is generally worse, it is full of pockets of skin. I have a piece of food or something stuck in it which I can't see. It is excessively annoying and irritating. Any ideas what I can do besides gargle?

PrettyCandles · 28/10/2005 16:37

GP said that it wasn't tonsilitis as there were no white blisters. According to the GP, what you describe is perfectly normal, Chocol8. In the past, when I have had something stuck on or in a tonsil, the only thing to dislodge it has been to sneeze. No idea what you can actually do about it, though. Have you tried homeopathy?

Chocolo8 - have a search for tonsil stones. Sounds like what you could have.

i for years and years had tonsilitus and had them removed after suffering for about 5 years every 2 weeks for 2 weeks. I came off the pill for the operation 3 weeks before and didnt have i agin. Had them removed and went back on the pill and got tonsilitus again. Very odd but the doctor thinks as i do that the pill was doing something to me. Of course i am sure that someone will disagree with me but it was too much of a coincidence as i kept getting it till i stopped the pill again. have been pill free for almost ten years and have not had it since.

Tonsil stones are basically a piece of food, bacteria and spit stuff like that gets caught up in the small holes that are caused by the tosilitus and become a bit stagnant. When these pocket become full they will spit out little smelly, hard and white stones.

There was a report in woman about it, i think gargle, reduce salt.
