first jabs - single possible?

I have decided to delay my dd's jabs and give the 8 week ones at about 5 months. Is it possible to get separate single jabs for these? Doctor's surgery not receptive to answering this question. Many thanks.

I don't think so no. Also there are so many it would take forever to get them done as you would normally leave weeks between each jab.

You won't get single vaccines from your GP. AFAIK there aren't any single d/T/P/IPV/HIB vaccines available anyway.

Although you may be able to get single polio privately but I'm not sure how likely that would be.

Oh that's a shame. We are moving to america for a couple of years with DH's work, so we are required to get her jabbed before we go. I was just wanting to make it as late as possible and to spread a few out. having so many in one go just seems asking for trouble.

No, I don't think there is a single polio vaccine available tbh (unless you are thinking of the old live OPV (oral polio vaccine). Although unless you are planning to travel to India or Africa you are VERY unlikely to contract polio (and even then it's unlikely.) In any case, less than 1% of polio cases are paralytic and a small percentage of those are long term. In over 99% of polio cases it is a very mild disease that causes very few symptoms. You can read about it on the NHS website here I would recommend that you read about all the diseases, their risks, incidence and side effects etc and work out which ones you are most concerned about and then make your enquiries about vaccinations. Also consider how likely you are to come into contact with the disease. In the case of polio the risk of coming into contact with it in the UK is tiny - there hasn't been a case here since the early 80s iirc so that may help you when you are considering the schedule that you want to follow.

Mac, which state are you going to? There are possible exemptions so you may be able to exclude a few if you decide there are some that you don't want (and you manage to find singles!)

thisisyesterday · 16/03/2011 21:56

no, you used to be able to get a 3 in one but iirc that's been stopped now and the 5-in-one is the only one.

Just looking at this with a private GP in Leeds. You can still get singles but if you want pertussis you can only get it in a triple with diphtheria and tetanus. All the rest are available as singles and they offer aluminium free options which is one of my concerns.

gooseberrybushes · 17/03/2011 10:25

I'm pretty sure you can get single IPV which is the safer polio vaccine. You should try with travel centres rather than your GP? Or Richard Halvorsen's clinic.

I think you might struggle going to the US to live without full vax certs. Have you checked out the full requirements. I think they also require Hep B and all sorts of other crap too.

Maybe bubble is right and some states have exemptions you could take advantage of. Some allow US residents to claim religious exemption and some states can be more "flexible" with that while some are awfully strict.

Can you discover a family medical reason for not vaccinating and get a doctor to sign it? I mean, that's if you're really determined.

Wow, thanks for the help. We are going as uk ggovernment employees so I will find out the requirement from them as it will prob be a USA wide one rather than just Nevada. I had the 'we aren't having the jabs yet' conversation with the gp's receptionist today, not fun.

Lots of people have delayed. I've found that the more reading and research one does, the more confidence one gains.

monkoray · 18/03/2011 18:42

try reading Do Vaccines cause that. its balanced but reassuring
