Anyone had an adult brace?

I can't decide what to do.

My jaw naturally bites on one side, and has done most of my life, since my adult teeth came through.

NHS dentist says that it will always do that, unless she refers me to a specialist who may be able to treat it with braces, but more likely surgery. She says that there is nothing actually "wrong" with my teeth/bite, but she can refer me if I want. It would be private and the cost of braces would be approx £2k, and obviously surgery is not a route I'd like to go down.

I have also been to see a private dentist for a consultation on Damon System braces - they are apparently the mutts nuts in braces as they guide your teeth into position rather than forcing them. These would be £4500 Shock. I'm not sure these would do anything for my wonky bite, but would be able to bring all my teeth out and give me a wider smile.

It would be more for cosmetic reasons than anything else, as I have a very narrow smile, and a lot of my teeth have started to tilt inwards.

I'm just wondering if anyone else has had a brace as an adult and how they got on?

It's a lot of money to spend if it's not going to achieve good results.

I did have braces and I hated them nightmare to keep clean I had clear ones and you have to be careful with anything that stains. I to should have had an a operation. I ditched the braces and chickened out. I wish I had stuck with it though.

interested in the new type of braces a limk ?? can your dentist refer you to see if it can be done on the nhs partly.

MikeHock · 16/03/2011 18:20

She says that they won't do any NHs funding for over 16 year olds anymore Sad.

Here is the link for the Damon ones - it's a US website though.

I'd originally enquired about Invisalign, but he said that although they look nicer, the results are not as good as traditional fixed braces.

Do you mind me asking what your specific problem was brookeslay?

I had fixed braces (train tracks!) on my top teeth and I loved them, weirdly. Made my teeth feel armoured lol. My teeth overlapped at the front and in all my pre brace photos I am not smiling, but afterwards I just look happier. I was v lucky and JUST scraped in the nhs treatment, would not have been able to do it otherwise. I still wear my retainer every night and prob will for ever just to keep them straight. It has increased my confidence loads and appearance wise worth any amount of make up and haircuts!

nightcat · 16/03/2011 18:41

Had mine many years ago and delighted with the result, they were train tracks (I was late 20's).
They were for closing a wide gap front top and even afterwards I had a metal bracket fixed at the back which only broke recently so I just pulled the other side off myself.
Only after braces I started to smile like this Grin
My friend had one recently in her 40's and also delighted, hers were for overcrowding.
Yes, expensive, but so worth it, go for it, they didn't exist when I was under 16.

I had the Damon system & only had to wear it for 9 months.

Your bite will be corrected with these.

I have just been asked to be the smile for my orthodontist's new business bumff & am being used to promote national orthodontic week lol.

OK, so it wasnt the most pleasant thing to have to endure as an adult but put it this way: I disliked my teeth to the point that wearing a brace was a better option!

I love my smile now & have no regrets what so ever.

Message me if you would like any info.

MikeHock · 18/03/2011 13:27

ooh mouffloncake - how interesting and exciting!

I really really want to try the Damon system and so glad to hear that it could correct my bite!

I used to have a nice smile, but over the past few years it has got smaller, and now when I smile it sometimes doesn't look like I'm actually smiling IYSWIM.

My DH has kindly informed me that I do look quite miserable a lot of the time (even though I'm not), and I worry that it will affect the way that other people view me Sad.

Do you mind if I ask how much your treatment cost?

Would love to see some before and after pics, but I understand if you're not comfortable showing them on here Smile.

Have you tried looking under health and beauty? i seem to remember seeing a thread on a similar problem recently.

taokiddy · 19/03/2011 16:04

I've had a fixed brace for about 18 months now and just last week had jaw realignment surgery which was nowhere near as bad as I thought it was going to be. Although I'm still a bit puffy (and only able to eat/ drink through a straw!) I'm thrilled with the results. Straight teeth, perfect bite and straight jaws at last. I'm 37 and always hated the way I looked so I'm really glad I went for it :)

crumbletastic · 19/03/2011 16:11

I have had my braces removed last year after 4(!) years and double jaw corrective surgery. I didn't mind braces as an adult but did have ceramic braces which are less obvious. Damons will not necessarily correct your bite, it will depend on each individual case but will definitely improve the appearance of your teeth

nomadwantshome · 20/03/2011 12:38

I had a fixed brace aged 37 and do not regret it for a minute. I had wandering teeth, a bit goofy, gaps etc from botched removal and brace in my teens. I LOVE my teeth now. I smile ALOT more and just get so much happiness from seeing my lovely straight teeth.

I see old photos and thank god I got it done. It was 1k up north. Had been quoted 2k down south.

I have a permanent retainer now at the back of my upper teeth.
