DS cut finger in garden, might he need a tetanus injection?

DS cut his finger on a piece of glass in the garden today. He was "digging" and picked it up thinking it looked interesting. I know I should have had closer eye on him, I was close by but obviously not close enough (in hindsight).

We are staying with my Aunt for a long weekend and I don't have his red record book so am unsure if he has had a tetanus vaccination as yet. He is almost 4 and has had all his vaccinations so far.

Does anyone know if he should have a tetanus booster. I seem to remember being dragged to my GP as a child for a booster when I cut myself.

I know the best thing to do is call my aunt's GP tomorrow for advice. However in the meantime any advice as to the likelihood of him needing to have a booster would be great.

If he has had all his scheduled vaccinations he will have had 3 doses as a baby. The booster is due from 3 years 4 months, most surgeries call children in their 4th year for this. If he has had the booster then he is covered, if not (and he may well not have been called yet) then he should have it.

He is covered from his primary course until he's about 5 anyway so there shouldn't be a problem with immunity levels at this age.

Thank you very much for replying Ethelina. Sorry if I am being silly but I am confused by your answer- do you mean that if he has not had his booster yet, he should have that booster ASAP? Or that he is covered for 5 years, so he should be ok?

Sorry Stickwithit, it was confusing reading it back.

He is covered now until he is 5, if he had his original 3 doses as a baby. He doesn't need an emergency booster if this is the case as his immunity levels will still be high.

He will be called for his preschool booster within the year, before his immunity levels drop.

Thank you for clarifying that for me. You have reassured me which is much appreciated, and helps ease the guilt!

I am sure he had all vaccinations on time, thank goodness. I will call our GP in the morning to double check.

Thank you again.

Your welcome. Hope his fingers ok.

Not sure, but your Dr will have recorded the info on his files, and you may be able to get them to contact your Aunt's surgery if one is necessary I would have thought. Hope he is OK.
