dentist says there is nothing wrong, so why do my teeth hurt?

i have had, for a fortnight, a dull throbbing pain in my upper jaw on one side only.

Dentist did an xray and says there is nothing wrong at all - I have very healthy teeth with no fillings - there is no sensitivity and gums are fine, just this constant ache that feels a bit like when my wisdom teeth were coming through (but they were all taken out 5 years ago so it's not that either!)

any ideas...?

when I had this it was actually sinusitis.

Indith · 14/03/2011 15:10

Sinuses?

didldidi · 14/03/2011 15:10

ha!

Indith · 14/03/2011 15:19

:)

Hurts like nothing on Earth though doesn't it. Every step you take feels like a jolt through your teeth.

On the other hand I had pain like sinus pain a while ago, had a bit of a cold so thought it would go, it didn't, it got worse and worse then the gum started to swell. the night before my dentist appointment while flossing a bit of that hard popcorn skin flew out form where it had been lodged deep down in the gum between my teeth. By morning all pain was gone! so maybe a good floss is in order! Failing htat is if is sinus related get snorting salt water.

ah, thank you...

i tried a good floss - it actually feels really nice having the pressure against the ache, but i'm pretty religious about flossing so i don't think there's anything stuck there.

if it's sinuses, what do i need to do? will it go away of its own accord?

sinuses. I have it at this very moment.

mrsravelstein · 14/03/2011 15:26

just looked up sinusitis, that sounds about right... apparently it normally clears after a few weeks, so fingers crossed

does snorting slat wtaer actually work? Doesn't it just cause more discomfort?!

tigana · 14/03/2011 15:27

ahem, salt water.

mousymouse · 14/03/2011 15:29

I think it does, but anyway nasal irrigation is weirdly pleasant

GlynisIsFixed · 14/03/2011 15:31

i've had sinusitis for the past 2 weeks and just started antibiotics today for it Sad

OP, you need lots of steam inhalations with/without menthol crystals added, i've never tried tried the salt water inhalation, and never had it suggested by any HCP but some people do swear by it [yuk]

it's a pain worse than toothache to me, hope yours clears soon.

mrsravelstein · 14/03/2011 16:26

thanks everyone for advice!

it could be sinusitus or trigeminal neuralgia possibly.
