Anyone know what the vaccination schedule was in the early 80s?

I need to provide uni with dates for my jabs as a child. My Mum says they were all done on schedule as per appointments from GP/ HV, no deviation or delay, but no idea what that entailed.

I was born in 1981 - any ideas?

Ask your gp it should be on your records, you may need a second MMR

GP no help I am afraid, I have moved a lot, and original records only retained until your 25th birthday apparently.

The MMR controversy was later, I think - I was born in 1988 and it was mainly people around my age group which didn't get the booster. I didn't get the booster, but when tested for immunity to german measles in pregnancy was found to be immune anyway.

I think it will mainly be the MMR they want to know but they will only need rough estimates anyway - do you have any friends born in the same year you could ask?

I've just dig out DS's old NHS vaccination record (he was born in 1980). Babies then were vaccinated against Diptheria, Polio, Whooping Cough and Tetanus at roughly 3 months, 6 months and 12 months. Children had a booster of these vaccinations upon school entry.

Hope that helps.

The MMR was not given in the UK until the late 1980s, so you probably didn't have it. However, you were most probably vaccinated against measles at least once. If you didn't get done as a baby (I can't remember when it started here but neither of my children had it) then you would have had it done when you were at school. There was a measles epidemic in the early 1990s and all school children were offered vaccination then.

You should also have received a Rubella vaccination during your school days, probaly at age 13 or 14.

I am a little older the BertieBotts and only had one MMR. I tested immune for rubella in pregnancy but just got tested for immunity by my uni occupational health (am studying to be a SALT) and although immune to rubella am not immune to measles or mumps so need another MMR.

Everyone on my course who was tested and over about 23 needed an MMR booster

I remember my mum taking me along to the doc for 'a prick and a sugarlump' Hmm at about age 5 - I think it was polio, and the sugarlump was laced with something disgusting, so not sure what that was.

You prob also had BCG at age 12/13ish, and rubella at 11ish.

BertieBotts · 13/03/2011 20:17

Sugarlump would have been polio I think, didn't it used to be oral?

meliesmummy · 13/03/2011 21:44

I was born in 1981, I had to look mine up before uni, I definately had polio, diphtheria and whooping cough, I had measles on its own but my sister had the mmr (she was born in 1985). I had the bcg and rubella in secondary school, and a measles booster because there was an outbreak. I also had tetanus. A few years ago I was called to my gp because I needed an mmr, apparently everyone of my age was meant to be called. Oh, and I had a men c when I started uni in 2000. Sorry, can't be more specific than that. My mum had them written on a pink card if that helps?

BeehiveBaby · 13/03/2011 21:58

Wow, thanks!

This is really useful.

I was born in 81 too and recently found out I wasn't vaccinated against measles as a child. Mum reckons i had all the scheduled jabs, so maybe measles wasn't one of them then? Had the measles jab in the 90s when there was an outbreak, and the mmr in 2003 at uni.

Also had rubella at secondary school, then tb and polio on a different occasion (polio definitely on a sugar cube!), plus all the ones 80smum mentions when a baby.

meditrina · 13/03/2011 22:10

Measles jab was introduced in about 1970 (the single jab), not sure what age it was given. DPT was given to infants, plus the sugar lump version for polio. There was a polio top up (can't remember what age, but I remember having it), and tetanus booster at about the same time. Rubella at about age 11, and BCG early teens.
