Numb/burning patches on my back and tummy, What could it be?

Please help? Should I see my GP?

I have one area just under my left breast where the skin seems to burn and be sore but doesn't look out of the ordinary, yet when I touch it I can't really feel what I touch.

I have another just the same on my on the right side of my back where my bra is.

I've had them for a few months now and they are annoying me more and more.

I'm not a Dr but sounds like the symptoms of shingles to me.

Worth a trip to the GP I reckon.

fruitymum · 12/03/2011 19:22

if its a sore red area under your breast it may be candida - get it checked out by your GP/ nurse - easily treated if it is.

TheMaleyDail · 12/03/2011 19:30

It's not red. It feels like it is 'under' the skin. The back one hurts the most.

Can you have shingles for a few months? I went to the GP for unexplained tiredness but gave up when she wanted to diagnose depression.

The internet says I've had a snake bite!!! Hmm

Tiredness is quite common with shingles and it can certainly last a few months.

TheMaleyDail · 12/03/2011 19:45

Sorry, I've had the tiredness since puberty. The numb patches for months. They come and go, are always in the same place and each time come back stronger and right now they are peeing me write off.

I wouldn't say they are painful exactly, but they do feel sore.

I just can't work out what it could be.

bump?

It sounds similar to shingles to me too.

Is the soreness tingly like lots of little needles pricking the area?

I had shingles years ago, and it felt like that (similar to having a tattoo, but weirdly more painful!)

Probably best to mention to a doctor, maybe see a different one to last time if you feel she didn't listen to you.

Doesn't sound like shingles to me, it sounds more like a nerve problem. You need to go and see your GP. Do you get pins and needles in your feet also?

eviscerateyourmemory · 12/03/2011 21:18

I think that you need to see a GP - did you mention the numb/burning patches last time you were there?

TheMaleyDail · 12/03/2011 21:18

It is a bit prickly, but also numb when I rub it.

The thing is, I don't have any kind of rash.

Your GP is the person to go and see Smile

TheMaleyDail · 12/03/2011 21:20

No, not anywhere else. No I didn't mention it.

She sent off for bloods which came back normal and then scared me off with talk of depression which I know I don't have.

You need to let her know about all your symptoms, the pain and numbness is important for her to take into account.

belledechocchipcookie · 12/03/2011 21:23

Do you get lots of pins and needles??

TheMaleyDail · 12/03/2011 21:28

No. I don't. But I do get dizzy spells when I am inactive, like sitting down or lying down sometimes.

I mean, I don't get dizzy spells when I stand up suddenely much (although ocassionally, but I treat them as normal)

Why is pain and numbness important? I really can't find anything that mentions it.

TheMaleyDail · 12/03/2011 21:39

The problem is, I need to know immediately if it likely to be contagious as I am making daily visits to intensive care....

OP posts:
beautifulgirls · 12/03/2011 21:44

if shingles stay away from intensive care yes.

belledechocchipcookie · 12/03/2011 21:47

I think you need a referal to a neurologist to be checked over. I'm not saying that it's anything serious or nasty, it does need checking out though. I'd pop back to the GP and ask for a referal, may be best to see a different one as the one who thinks you're depressed doesn't seem too helpful.

TheMaleyDail · 12/03/2011 21:59

She thinks I'm depressed because my dad is intensive care with just a few more days/weeks!

belledechocchipcookie · 12/03/2011 22:00

Sad I'm so sorry.

TheMaleyDail · 12/03/2011 22:06

Oh, thanks. It's tough, but that is why I don't wanna have anything horrible.

OP posts:
belledechocchipcookie · 12/03/2011 22:14

I work on the basis that it's always best to know what you're dealing with, at least you're not left wondering.

The sensations that you're describing are similar to something called neuralgia, it's not infectious (unless caused by shingles but there will be other symptoms, such as the rash). My skin 'burns' and tingles, it moves around. I also suffer from fatigue and occasional dizzyness. I know what causes mine though as I went to see the neurologist and has some tests. You can get medication for your symptoms but I've found accupuncture to be very helpful. If there's anything that you need then I'm usually around. I'm so sorry to hear about your father. Sad

TheMaleyDail · 12/03/2011 22:27

Thanks belle, that is really helpful. I've never heard of that before but it looks interesting and possible.

I'll go back to the GP as soon as I have a minute and try to get her to be helpful. She told me that if my bloods were normal she'd refer me to a psychiatrist. I can't have a psyschiatrist referal on my records as I am taking our LA to tribunal and they are trying to paint me out to be deluded.

TBH, I think I SHOULD be depressed, but I know I'm not yet.

OP posts:
belledechocchipcookie · 12/03/2011 22:31

You need a neurologist, not a psychiatrist. I really do hope you get something sorted soon. If there's anything that you need then please do shout.
