Racing heart - please reassure me !!

I am in my late 30s and have always been prone to worrying about my health (always imagining the worst !) but in general pretty healthy. Very slim and never smoked, etc.

Anyway, I have recently noticed that if I run for the bus, etc. my heart does that thing where it feels like it's almost going up to your throat, iykwim. Strange because I think I am reasonably fit. At other times have also felt like my heart is beating too fast or does a little skip.

Today I had an ECG and while it was being done (with my lying down) my heart started racing (the woman said it went from 80 to 120, whatever that means) and she thought it was odd and asked me if I was nervous. Anyway, I am quite worried. I then went shopping and felt fine...

I will be going to see my GP to follow up on results, but in the meantime can you reassure me that I am unlikely to drop dead? Smile

I am think I probably am quite anxious about lots of things and am a bit sleep deprived. (Generally have always had 8.5 hours sleep but over the last 2 or 3 months it's been 5 or 6 hours.)

thank you !!

I have exactly the same thing, and will await some advice. I wonder whether it is related to my thyroid, or low ferritin (iron)?

bump - anyone?

There are lots of possible explanations for this, and as far as I know none of them mean you are likely to drop dead!

I suffered tachycardia when I was younger - in my case it was the result of a 'short circuit' in my heart, which was sorted out with a procedure called radiofrequency ablation (not fun, but it worked and I have been fine ever since).

It's good that you are going to the GP to get it followed up. If you suffer an attack that goes on for more than a few minutes, try drinking ice cold water - this triggers the vagus nerve which for some reason often sets your heart rhythm back to normal (not sure this is a very scientific description!). Hope you both get this sorted out soon, I know it can be quite scary and unpleasant.

it could be a panic attack 120 isnt too bad, but it depends how quickly its jumping up.
My rest heart rate is 120 so mine jumps very high when i exserice.
See the GP but 120 is not going to make you drop dead :)

Well I think the fact that you are going back is obv. a good thing.

And did your heart rate go down?

When I was having trouble breathing whilst exercising it was discovered that I have arrhythmia.

Am now on a beta blocker-Dr gave me a packet in the surgery & made me take one before I left!

I thought that anything over 100 was too high tbh.

Thanks for all the comments !
Have been ok this weekend, but then again I have been taking things easy - lots of sleep and no running for the bus !!

Diddl - yes, I am going to follow it up - particularly that I live alone with DD and so I guess i am particularly concerned about something happening to me.

Try not to worry, it's a good thing to go back and follow it up though.
I have something similar to MooncupGoddess, am on tablets and had the Ablation. My heart rate has been recorded at 200 bpm and i'm most definately still here :0 doing body combat classes, jogging etc :0
At least your doctor has managed to catch it on an ECG took months to catch mine.
Good luck
