root canal treatment or extraction?

I'm due to go to the dentist tomorrow for root canal treatment, following an absess. The tooth in question already has an enorous filling. Its at the back of my mouth. I can't decide whether or not it would be better jsut to have i out. i've heard that root canals don't last that long so would it be better just to get on with inevitable. If I do have it done, I'm gonig to have a white filling, my dentist said it will be about £300 . i don't want to spend all that money for it to need new treatmetn agin soon. Anyone had an extraction and pleased with it ???
Thanks so much. I've just upped my hours at work, so glad the extra money wil be going to such goos use!

Get rid of it if its right at the back! It'll be nothing but trouble and expense. If its between two other teeth though possibly think again. I've got a gap near the back and when I eat crisps it sometimes gets sore on the gum.

hi lisa,i agree with thunderbird, get rid of it,i had a root canal treatment and a year later while on holiday i had the most horrific pain followed by an abscess so huge i couldn`t open my eye,if you do have it done ask for an x-ray to confirm that they have done everything right, good luck!

My dh had a tooth right at the back pulled instead of root canal for budgetary reasons. His only regret is that he can't make donald duck noises any more. Go for it.

Thanks all for your help. I had more or less decided to go for an extraction. I went to the dentist this morning and she re exrayed, then decided I didn't need root canal treatment after all. Just a filing, hurray!!
