hip pain

hi, just wondered if anyone else had experienced this and what the outcome was?

During my last 2 pregnancies I suffered with bad hip pain. The pain was worse at night when lying on my side. I would have to switch sides every 20 minutes or so during the night which meant I got very little sleep. Incidentally after my 2nd pregnancy I suffered with sciatica - not sure if this was related, but it cleared up after a couple of months. I didn't have any more pain until my 3rd pregnancy.

I thought that once I had had dc3, the hip pain would stop, but it hasn't. I'm finding it, sometimes, reoccurs in the week before my period. Sometimes I get no pain at all. Often the pain is relieved by walking. This month, it is very painful - the pain isn't relieved by walking and it is constant Sad.

I went to the doctors a few months ago, was sent for an xray which showed no problems. I didn't go back to the doctors because I didn't get any more pain.

I think it's hormonal but obviously I need to go back to the doctors!

TIA

It is without a shadow of a doubt synthesis pubis disorder. You need pyhsio. No cure, you will just be told over and over again to "strengthen your core" if I had a pound.....
My sympathies but it will ease over the years

Thanks for responding.

Really? I had had an inkling but I didn't think it was severe enough eg I didn't need crutches while pregnant.

I have just done the school run and the pain is travelling down my legs a little.

I will need to tell the doctor I think I have spd? I'm crap at going to the doctor and always end up being fobbed off with xrays and painkillers.

just got this from babycentre Some ex-sufferers find the pain recurs every month just before their period is due

That's why I think it is SPD as mine is always painful in hip and back the week before my period. Pain never really was in pelvic area

Bitofalurkerreally · 10/03/2011 21:05

I had SPD in both my pregnancies and in fact did not lie down for more than 40 mins at a time from week 18 of my last pregnancy, as hips were SO painful. However 14 months on and I still have tender hips but no SPD (except monthly twinge) - musculo-skeletal specialist said I have in bursitis in hips, which I think is inflammation of tendons/ligament and can be treated , wish they had spotted it when I was pregnant.

Make sure you see a specialist physio, it will help with the SPD

moogalicious · 11/03/2011 09:05

How long have you had it cheekey

Sounds like me when I was pregnant bitofalurker. Although the pain this month is worse than when I was pregnant Sad

Am off to docs this morning. I was in a lot of pain last night, hips feel like they're grinding when I walk and were clicking.

Hope you got some support at the GP if not keep pushing your GP and if he/she's not much use try a different GP!

Have you come across the Pelvic Partnership - charity focusing on SPD during and after pregnancy, might be some support / advice there.

Imnotaslimjim · 11/03/2011 13:51

Definitely sounds like SPD. First thing you need to do is keep your legs together. make sure when you're walking that you don't swing your legs too far forward. Turn the hips in one full swing rathr then one foot then the other. And in bed, sleep on your back, with a pillow under your knees to lock the hips, this will reduce the stiffness and pain caused from lying still

If you go see your GP, they should pass you to physio ASAP who will sort you out with some support belts and possibly crutches.

cheekeymonkey · 11/03/2011 16:14

DD is 4 and have had it since about 3 months into pregnancy. Another tip, if you like lying on your side for sleep I find it more comfortable to have a pillow between my knees to keep my hips in alignment. Also stops you getting pregnant again and starting it all over againWink

moogalicious · 11/03/2011 18:30

bitofalurker no luck at the docs today - doctor said I had her stumped, even when I mentioned spd Hmm. Got prescribed more painkillers and told to keep a diary of the pain. Next stop is an MRI scan. Will have a look at that website once the dc's are in bed - thanks.

cheekey thanks I will try doing that. I used to sleep like that when pregnant so don't know why I didn't think of it.

Thanks slimjim - although I hope I don't get to the stage when I need a support belt and crutches!

I would be interested to know the outcome OP as I have had similar in both my pregs, continuing on after the second one. Hope you find an answer.

I have also had bursitis (trochanteric) post-preg, and a corticosteroid/ local anaesthetic injection helped massively.

narmada · 13/03/2011 09:22

I have been wondering about endometriosis as mine also gets worse from ovulation onwards.

bumble34 · 13/03/2011 09:44

Sounds like pelvic girdle pain the new name for spd Which you can get in pregnancy but it doesn't always go afterwards and some people just get anyway. It needs treatment not just mangement with pain killers and the such. They often won't treat in pregnancy as your hormones are blamed but if it carries on post pregnancy then you definitely need some form of manipulation. There is a new school of thought that it should be tearted in pregnancy too but very few physios do this yet.
Def have a look at the pelvic partnership website really informative Print of some info take it to your gp and ask for a referal to a physio or consider an osteopath.
In the mean time pelvic floor exercises will help as will avoiding over doing it. Don't put up with it. I've got pgp with this my 3rd pregnancy and am on crutches but now in hind sight realise I've had intermitent hip pain ever since first pregnancy 20 years ago which has been brushed off by medical professionals. I'm hoping an osteopath can help

moogalicious · 13/03/2011 21:15

narmada the pain has subsided, although still haven't got my period. My hips are still achy, but it is barely noticeable. I'm going to keep track of the intensity of the pain this month and go back to the doctors before my next period. I imagine endometriosis to be a different kind of pain - mine feels like a grinding pain and the area around the hip joint is tender. It isn't a period pain type pain iyswim.

bumble I guess it's going to be a slow process with the doctors, much like any other joint pain. I can't believe spd/pgp didn't register with my doctor though! I have had a look at the website and will definitely print off the information when I go again.
