Ovulation pain?

ChickensHaveNoEyebrows · 07/03/2011 16:11

Since I had DS2 (7) I've had bouts of IBS, usually coinciding with ovulation. So saturday night, just as I was going to bed, I got that deeply unpleasant griping in my lower abdomen. I took my Mebeverine tablet and hoped I wouldn't spend all night in the loo. Anyway, I had the pains on and off all night but didn't need to go to the loo (in fact couldn't). I got up yesterday morning and had to take some paracetemol, as the pain was making me feel faint/nauseous. It suddenly occurred to me that it was possibly more uterus than bowel. I think I was ovulating over the weekend, although my cycle is wonky. Anyway, today I still have low level pain which gets better if I'm moving around/walking fast/using a hot water bottle. I also feel constipated, although I tend to get that around ovulation anyway. So, does this sound like just a random pain at ovulation? And will someone please tell me it will go away soon? Because I don't much like it. Oh, and if it could be arranged for it to never, ever come back, that would also be good

Chickens,

I note you have had this for some time as well so I do not think this is some random ovulation pain.

I remember using the hot water bottle as well, in my case all this was caused by endometriosis. It is the second most common gynae problem seen in women after fibroids.

Endometriosis can often be mistaken for IBS and your symptoms to me are suggestive of endometriosis (it can also affect the bowels and you mention pain coinciding with possible ovulation).

Are your periods very painful or is it really bad in the days leading up to the period?.

(Would also mention that deep pain during sex is also suggestive of endo being present).

Any pain that is cyclical in nature and gets worse up to and including menstruation ought to be checked out properly for endometriosis and by a gynae as well. It is NOT a problem within a GPs remit so do not let the GP mess around in ignorance.

This does not go away of its own accord either; the best person to see in this regard would be your GP who needs to refer you onto a gynaecologist.

I sincerely hope this is not endo but you need to be persistant in order to get answers. It is all too easy to be fobbed off. Do not put up with this whatever you decide to do. Seek medical advice and soon too.

My periods aren't regular, but they are never heavy or painful. These symptoms always seem to crop up mid-cycle. The lead up to my period is often marked my horrendous PMT, but those symptoms are more of the murderous mood variety. No pain during marital relations . The pain has eased considerably now, and I think it is now mainly constipation making me uncomfortable. If it returns next month, I will be harassing my GP severely.

I get this but mine is due to PCOS - go to your GP and get a referral to a gynae as already suggested.

I don't know what they side effects of the Mebeverine may be does it say anything on the leaflet about constipation?

In the meantime stick with the hotwater bottle, drink plenty of water and eat food that is easy to digest (to try to ward off the constipation) and don't take any painkillers (like coediene) that make constipation work as this will put more pressure on the bowels and uterus, and take ibuprofen.

Irregular cycles can be caused by hormonal imbalances but in itself would perhaps not cause such pain to arise mid cycle. I would see if blood tests can be done to see if there is a hormonal cause for the irregular cycles. I have PCOS and it is not painful. The pains I had mid cycle in my case was caused by endometriosis.

Mid cycle pain should always be checked out by a gynae (and not the GP) particularly if it persists.

BTW if endo is there (and I sincerely hope it is not) it is not detectable on any ultrasound scan or blood test; the usual way it is diagnosed is through a keyhole surgery op called a laparoscopy.

I've had blood tests in the past because of severe PMT, and they never show anything abnormal. Hmmm. Think I'll see if it recurrs next month, and if it does will go to the doc and ask for a referral. Ovary pain felt just like bad menstrual cramps, but has now passed. I'm now uncomfortable with what feels like constipation (sorry, TMI).

If endometriosis is suspected, is there any treatment?

Not sure about endometriosis - they suspected I had this but I didn't I got the pain because of the size and number of cysts that developed on one of my ovaries every month.

Keep an eye on it and try to keep a diary if you can.

Thanks all :) I've marked the 'ow' in my diary, and will see how it goes next month. Am absolutely fine now Hmm
