Sorry pressed send too soon. I can't have aspirin/ibuprofen because it affects my breathing (asthma)

You're into the proper opiates there, sorry.

What's it for?

hardhatdonned · 06/03/2011 21:34

Nowt without a prescription.

PaperView · 06/03/2011 21:36

Oh dear Confused

I whacked my elbow on friday and its still really painful. Got full movement but with a lot of pain. Will give GP a ring in that case.

Unless it's a migraine, neither your pharmacist nor GP can do much more if you are sensitive to aspirin and ibuprofen. For migraines, there are specialist treatments. Hope you feel better soon.

zingzillachinchilla · 06/03/2011 21:42

Sorry, didn't see your last post. GP can't do much more - there aren't too many options for pain relief. Are you quite sure you've not broken or chipped a bone? Might be worth an x-ray

PaperView · 06/03/2011 21:46

Could it be broken if i have full movement? Would there be a lump if i had chipped a bone?

There is a bruise that doesn't seem to have got any worse. Swelling was gone by Y'day morning.

OP posts:
hardhatdonned · 06/03/2011 21:55

Chances are it's just very heavily bruised but with that level of pain get it checked out for definite.

zingzillachinchilla · 06/03/2011 21:57

It's possible to have a bad chip or minor fracture without loss of movement, yes. Wouldn't expect the bruise to get bigger - the blood vessel which 'leaked' after impact will have clotted pretty quickly, so it's more common to see the bruise move due to gravity. If it's still very painful, you may well have a chip or hairline fracture but the bad news is that there is nothing much they can do. However, that probably means they wouldn't have to immobilize your arm which is good! Get some arnica to help with the healing, and hang on in there with the cocodamol.

bruxeur · 06/03/2011 22:01

Arnica doesn't work. Try rubbing your tummy and patting your head at the same time. This also does not work, but has the advantage of being free.

PaperView · 06/03/2011 22:01

I didn't even hit it v hard!

OP posts:
zingzillachinchilla · 06/03/2011 22:08

Arnica is cheap as chips, and while no clinical trials exist, anecdotally it has been found to be effective. So long as you don't have to remortgage your house to buy it, it will do you no harm to try it. And your GP can prescribe it, by the way, so if you don't pay prescription charges, it's free! Grin

hardhatdonned · 06/03/2011 22:13

Hot and/or cold compresses can help too, as does a LOT of rest.

AimingForSerenity · 06/03/2011 22:14

GP will not prescribe Arnica unless they are also registered as a homeopath which is not likely, there are not many. I agree it's worth a try, I've used it and it seemed to work for me and I'm a sceptical scientist and didn't expect it to.

You can buy Co-Codamol aka Paracetamol with Codeine in an 8/500 strength but the stronger version 30/500 is prescription only

LessNarkyPuffin · 06/03/2011 22:16

Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation.

If it's still bad tomorrow ask the doctor for an anti inflammatory you can take with your asthma.

PaperView · 06/03/2011 22:29

I have arnica cream...will that do?(what does it do?)

Been resting as much as poss but also been trying to keep moving it so the muscles don't seize up. DOes that make sense? Nothing strenuous, just gently rotating and straightening it.

MrClaypole · 06/03/2011 22:31

Paracetamol and codeine.

You have to ask the pharmacist, it's kept behind the counter.

MrClaypole · 06/03/2011 22:33

Oops forgot to say, don't take it with any other medicine containing paracetamol.

For me it works miles better than the regular paracetamol.

PaperView · 06/03/2011 22:35

That's what i have MrCP - Co -Codamol

Ty tho :)

OP posts:
alypaly · 06/03/2011 22:51

paramol is stronger than co-codamol. it is dihydrocodeine which is stronger than codeine

PaperView · 07/03/2011 11:50

Thanks Aly. SOrry i missed your post earlier. I am assuming tat i can't carry on with ANY codeine based meds at the moment if i am on day 3 of taking them?

Pain is less now, still hurting a lot but it's a different kind of hurting now. I know that doesn't make sense!

Going to have a chat with my local pharmacist later on.
