Run out of honey - what will soothe my cough ?

I've had a nasty flu-ey cough all week, feel rotten, and I've coughed sooo much I've pulled a stomach muscle .

I'm getting better, aching bones have settled down, and I've been up and about for the last couple of hours - going back to bed in a while.

But this nasty dry cough is constant, a permanent tickle in my throat, and I'm coughing every 20 - 30 seconds, which hurts my tummy, and won't let me sleep at all.

Dr just said it's a virus, so nothing she can suggest, except I have a bottle of clear linctus from the chemists, which makes no difference at all.

Just checked the kitchen cupboards, but no honey (might maple syrup do the job, in a lemony drink?)

Any suggestions eagerly accepted....

Hot juice can help a little, I was given pholcodine (cough suppressant) for nasty cough over xmas, that definately helped, ask your pharmacist.

thanks Imelda, I'll send dh out to chemists tomorrow.

I'll make some hot Vimto (ds's treat bottle) and see if that helps.

I'm afraid I have had this cough fir 2-3 months now, seen 3 different gps and it doesn't seem to ease up.... I am at the stage where it irritates so much that I throw up nightly and am worried about pee-ing everytime I cough! I found that combining a decongestant with cough mixture helps as if my nose is clear I can avoid throat breathing a bit...

Benylin do a cough and mucus syrup but it's about £6!

Good luck

When we were little my mum used to give us a spoon with half butter and half sugar to stop us coughing. No idea if it works, we started coughing just to get it Blush

Notremotelyintofootie, have you been given steroids at all to help clear up your cough?, both I, DS & DSis were given steroids to help clear lingering cough, seemed to work.

PepsiPopcorn · 05/03/2011 10:14

Have you tried breathing in a bowl of steam with a towel over your head?

notremotelyintofootie · 05/03/2011 15:47

Hi imelda, not yet although I take inhaled steroids for ny asthma... Am back at doctors on Tuesday! Dh has a little cold this weekend and has taken to bed, I can't help thinking that if I did that I might be better by now but I'm not allowed to be I'll! Lol

The only reason you 'not allowed to be Ill' is because YOU struggle to keep going!
Why do So many women do this? If you are ill, and rest/ease up for a day or two, you will recover more quickly.your oh should take as much responsibility for the children as he can, until you are on the mend.

My dh would be really cross if I was poorly for weeks & weeks, and didn't take time to try to get better.

As it was, I had to stay in bed 2 days this week, I was just too poorly to keep going. Dh left work early to do school pick-up, and then worked at home later at night to meet his deadline this week.

Do you have any glycerine? That is good for soothing tickly coughs.

Probably only a useful tip is you do some occasional baking and cake decorating!

mumtoted · 05/03/2011 20:48

Got any cabbage? An old remedy is to tape a cabbage leaf on to your chest and one on your back overnight!

You could try this: www.guardian.co.uk/society/2004/nov/23/health.research
has to be dark chocolate though.
