Symptoms can be excessive thirst, urination.Dizzy spells etc

Easiest way to test is simple fingerprick test which can tell you if glucose levels are elevated, but for proper test would probably need to do a fasting blood glucose level.

that is a very brief answer sorry.I would google reputable site.IIRC there is the british diabetic association or try nhs website.

bumble34 · 03/03/2011 21:52

Also weight loss and tiredness a urine test can also be dipstick tested for ketones completely pain free apart from catching a wee from a very small child!

Can i ask why you are asking and is it a child or an adult?

cece · 03/03/2011 22:05

It's me, I am just so thirsty all of the time, so I am starting to wonder if I have diabetes.

I don't think I can have though as I have put on weight! LOL

Before I was diagnosed I was drinking about 4 litres a day and lost a stone (I was twelve) also up at night to go to the loo and drink more, nothing could quench my thirst I had to get myself excused from class to go and drink

bumble34 · 04/03/2011 20:39

definitely worth checking with your gp it's so easy to rule out Better to know than to leave something unchecked

cece · 06/03/2011 20:32

sunnydays, blimey that is a lot! I don't think I am that thirsty and I have put on about a stone, so really don't think I have it now. Thank you for your help.

Type 1 diabetes normally involves weight loss, whereas type 2 would involve weight gain.

Itrymybest · 06/03/2011 20:39

I have diabetes INSIPIDES and the main sympton for that is an extreme unquenchable thirst and a constant need to go to the toilet relentlessly day and night. Thats caused by if the pituaritry gland doesnt produce enough or any anti diuretic hormones. Def always worth going to the gp if you have excessive thirst.

Itrymybest · 06/03/2011 21:09

it is v easy controlled btw with desmospray!

bumble34 · 07/03/2011 19:43

Check out the diabetes uk website for advice they also have risk checkers for your risk of becoming diabetic in the future.

Putting on weight is no guaruntee that you haven't developed diabetes, but rather than putting it off why not make an appointment for a couple of days time, then you could cancel if things have improved rather than have to wait iyswim?

Oh and as an aside how long have the symptoms been developing, is it a gradual thing or just really recent?

cece · 08/03/2011 20:47

I did the symptoms checker at the diabetes website and it did come out quite high risk for the future.

I appear to have several of the predisposing factors. Will ask at reception when I go in with DD later in the week.

Hope that things go your way at the appt (do it do it do it!) I also have reasonably high risk familial history etc) But forwarned is forarmed and the soon you treat and deal with diabetes effectively the more you can misimise the longer term repercussions.

cece · 08/03/2011 22:46

Yes it is in my family too.
