I'm waiting for NHS direct to ring me back but have been told it'll be up to 3 hours... don't know what to do, I've got a sudden attack of cystitis and seem to be peeing mostly blood (sorry if that's TMI). It's awful and I'm a bit freaked by it, everybody else is asleep ...

I wqas just talking about this very subject with my mate today!!! I had a similar expereince peeing blood when I had cystitis. The pain was soooooooo bad I thought I was going to die, the GP wasn't concernd and just gave me anti-biotics.

My mum's mum has got exactly the same thing at the moment and was given anti-biotics from her GP today.

It is really awful and sore and I had a terrible fever, bt once the anti-biotics kicked in, I was fine.

Hope this allays your fears

bubble99 · 19/10/2005 00:44

Has this happened before?

Redtartanlass · 19/10/2005 00:45

Sorry not my mums mum, my friends mum

overdraft · 19/10/2005 00:46

ring the doctors and go to the emergency place that is now open. This is horrible. You won't be able to sleep.Start drinking lots and lots of water now

overdraft · 19/10/2005 00:47

nothing to worry about just bloody painful

jabberwitchy · 19/10/2005 00:47

Cranberry juice! and lots of water in general. I've also had good luck with cranberry tablets. Of course, it sounds like they will put you on antibiotics as well, but maybe the juice/water will help in the meantime.

Redtartanlass · 19/10/2005 00:48

overdraft you're right there. Painful with a capital P. I remember clutching the side of the toilet thinking I was going to faint......

jabberwitchy · 19/10/2005 00:52

Oh, and sometimes peeing in a warm bath can help. I've never had to do this, but a friend did and she said it was the only way she could stand it.

ghoulgrrl · 19/10/2005 00:52

oh, thank you for responding.. bubble, I've had it a few times before, always similar to this really but there seems to be more blood than usual this time round.
overdraft, I'm starting to think the same thing - problem is I live in the sticks, nearest out-of-hours place is the A&E half an hour away. The thought of waiting another 8 hours to see a GP isn't pleasant, though.

Got nothing with cranberry in the house, am drinking water with bicarb at the mo...

GG NHS direct will probably advise going to GP tom for anti biotics. I know its painful but other posters are right in advising start drinking lots of water to try and flush out bacteria and if you can sitting in a warm bath and peeing in there can feel a bit more soothing.

ghoulgrrl · 19/10/2005 01:15

well, NHS Direct were as much use as a chocolate fireguard ('It is very possible that you have a UTI' - no sh*t Sherlock!).
Off to wallow in hoth bath in pee and misery.

Cranberry juice and lots of it! Get thee to the Doctors!

mawbroon · 19/10/2005 08:04

I experienced a lot of UTIs and kidney infections around 10 years ago. I know this is not going to help you right now, but I would recommend reading a book called "Understanding Cystitis" by Angela Kilmartin. I found it really helpful and have not suffered since.

What to do just now is drink at least a pint of water every hour. Seems like loads, but it really really will help. Try to avoid peeing unless there is actually something in your bladder to pee otherwise you will just burn the inside of your tubes with the superconcentrated pee and make things even worse.

HTH and good luck

mawbroon · 19/10/2005 08:05

Oh, and of course, see a doc asap......

fifilala · 19/10/2005 08:47

Lemon barley water also helps. beware of too much cranberry juice on a regular basis as can actually be damaging I think to the kidneys? Once the cystitis is over, take it as a preventative measure, 1 glass with breakfast. i used to get cystitis every 4 weeks - always if had s.x at time of ovulation (nightmare when trying to get pg!) here comes the science...less protection due to mucus being in abundance but not as thick!!!

Sorry to go on but one last thing, once treated with antibiotics, make sure you take another sample to dr's to ensure cleared up as if not gone fully, it will just re-occur. Hope you feel better soon.

ghoulgrrl · 19/10/2005 09:55

got my antibiotics (what a relief!) and am off to bed now.
mawbroon, you're right, it's a great book. I used to have chronic cystitis in my late teens/early 20s and managed to not have another bout of it for 8 years after following the advice in the book. I think I gave it away a few years ago... maybe that wasn't such a good move.
