Hi folks,

I've had a lot of hip/knee/shin pain for the last couple of years, and just before Christmas I was diagnosed with hip dysplasia, undiagnosed since birth. Confused Since then I've been on tramadol and have been referred to a surgeon, and have been advised that I'll likely need a pelvic osteotomy (www.surgeryencyclopedia.com/Fi-La/Hip-Osteotomy.html) in the very near future.

I have an appointment with the surgeon at the end of March, and now I know when the appointment is I am terrified. Is there anyone else here who has experience with this condition, or hip replacements in general, who can give me some advice?

Hi Cat,

A very good friend of mine had Aplassic hip from birth this is similar to a dysplasic hip (His hip and femur head did not formed correctly). This was corrected in 2004 when he was 33 by a total replacement of the right hip with a Johnson and Johnson srom replacement hip. Before this he was in extreme pain and was on high doses of Voltarol an Co-codamol.

Apart from his replacement he also had his right leg lengthened by 6cm (his leg was 6cm shorter due to the Aplasia) He was in theater for aprox. 5 hours, a normal hip will take about an hour and a half.

He was up and mobile within 48 hours (using a walking frame) and was home within a week on crutches and fully mobile within 6 weeks. He was on a morphine drip for the first few days and after that he was controlling it with normal ibuprofen. After care involved 6 weeks of physiotherapy 2 times a week and 3 weeks of hydrotherapy.

He is now completely pain free and so much more mobile than he was before and hasn't looked back since.

I hope this helps in some small way
