I had gestational diabetes with dd who is now 13 month. I have been quite run down lately and tired and dizzy so went to lloyds to have my blood sugar checked.

It was 5.8 3 hours after eating dinner which I thought was ok but the pharmacist said it was on the high side and advised gp. Wwyd surely 5.8 is wasting gps time

I think 5.8 is fine...maybe instead go back to the pharmacist and get it redone after eating a massive bar of chocolate Grin see what it is then, or try to get a morning one where you have been fasting for a while

belgo · 27/02/2011 09:18

With your history and symptoms, I agree with the pharmacist's advice.

I have found my blood sugar monitor form when I was pregnant. Did it this morning after fasting and it was 4.6, thats ok isnt it?

When else should I check I have forgotten the time scales did they did on the glucose intolerance tests.

Does sound slightly on the high side. Probably nothing to worry about but I'd see the GP to be sure (also had GD).

do another after fasting from 10pm then drinking 250ml lucozade (do bloods before) then check 2 hours later. Should be between 4-8mmol for normal.

mummytopebs · 28/02/2011 09:51

That was it Bonkerz I will get some lucozade (yak) and do it again tomorrow. Should it be between 4-8 2 hours after the lucozade? What should it be after the fast? I know when I was pregnant it was 11.5 2 hours after the lucozade.

Gwendoline how long ago did you have gd? Have you had any problems since?

yes between 4-8 after lucozade, and between 4-8 before too.

(my DH is insulin diabetic and has been for 8 years )

mummytopebs · 28/02/2011 09:57

Thanks Bonkerz will do it again tomorrow.

Had GD diagnosed at 38 weeks pg so it was New Year 2008. Have had no problems since that I know of. Just read your OP properly again and seen that it was 5.8 3 hours after eating. My guidelines were below 7.0 2 hours after eating so you should fall within that.

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 28/02/2011 16:50

5.8 is at the very top of the normal fasting range if you have GD.

Mine has to be lower than 5.8 first thing and before meals (and I would count 3 hours since eating as needing a fasting level). It can be up to 7.8 one hour after eating.

Why not just go to your GP and have a proper GTT done at the hospital and then you know?

oldraver · 28/02/2011 19:14

Ive just had my paperwork back from some research I took part in for the Diabetes Centre in Oxford. They have said 'normal range' for a fasting (overnight) is 'less than 6.0 mmol/l'

I too had GD and my GP does a fasting test every so often so I would see your GP

xstitch · 01/03/2011 11:44

I don't think it sounds too bad for 3 hours after eating, higher than average though. I would see if you can get a fasting blood sugar (ie fasting overnight) at your GP. Then you can see if its still high. Better safe than sorry.

As you had GD during pregnancy, shouldn't you have your bloods checked every year anyway. I have to have mine done each year, and despite last year mine showing no signs of Diabetes, I still had to have them done again. (although there is a family history so they might just be being more cautious.

Given that you have had it previously I would get it checked out, it wouldn't take too much time and you'd know for sure. Last thing you'd want is to be diabetic and undiagnosed!
