Natural Yoghurt for Thrush

notasausage · 26/02/2011 16:03

Can anyone tell me how long I need to use the Yoghurt for before I'm cured? Just started it this morning. Also - am changing tampons every 2 hours - is that OK?

Plenty of info on using natural Yoghurt to treat thrush but not really about how to do it!

I have suffered from thrush on and off for years and have never found yoghurt to be very successful in actually curing thrush, it does help to sooth particularly if you are sore rather than itchy. I always applied it like a cream and put a panti-liner on.

However my advice to you would be to go down the canesten route. It works very quickly and you will see results with in a day or two. You could be still applying yoghurt next week with very little results!

Plus my G.P advised me that using tampons can irritate the infection further.

I have suffered for years ,would recommend diflucan rather than canestan ,take the oral one ,it definately works quicker ,also go to health food shop and get pro bioyic capsules ,yoghurt fine for mild irritation but IME doesn't touch full blown thrish

longislandicetea · 26/02/2011 16:40

oh isn't diflucan the medical name for canesten then? I always thought they were the same thing? (confused)

mrswoodentop · 26/02/2011 16:44

No different,I am alergic to canestan and have to have diflucan instead so there must be difference!

hairylights · 26/02/2011 16:44

I recommend a tampon soaked in live yoghurt over night. It's the only thing that gets rid of it for me. Two hours isn't long enough.

longislandicetea · 26/02/2011 16:47

ok right that's one to remember. I can't take the oral tablet...which I guess is diflucan as I am alergic to that! What do the pro bioyic capsules do, prevent or cure?

notasausage · 26/02/2011 17:17

Can't use the oral treatments as am 14 weeks pregnant. Am using a tampon dipped in yoghurt every 2 hours rather than soaked - perhaps dipped isn't enough yoghurt Grin.

Am also drinking cranberry juice and probiotic drinks. MW also recommended ironing pants etc as 40degree washes don't get rid of the infection so you can get recurring infections.

Have also heard of tea tree oil on a tampon or on a pantyliner but haven't got any of that yet.

Ask your midwife if you can use a pessary whilst pregnant as that will clear it up.

nightcat · 26/02/2011 18:38

You would be bettr off taking a zinc supplement, coz fungal infections are linked to zinc deficiency.
Read up on it, but I am quite certain it would be OK in pregnancy as it's also in some multivit/mineral tablets.

PLEASE DO NOT USE TAMPONS!!!

Tampons are unhealthy because they encourage growth of unhealthy bacteria, they prevent vaginal cleaning by keeping this bacteria within your vagina, and damage vaginal walls (particularly when not menstruating, as it states on most boxes, as with no flow they'll absorb more flow thus causing more drying and ulceration/splitting as a result- this increases TSS risks by at least 33%) - as such they are a well-known common CAUSE of vaginal infections.

Even if you're menstruating you should NEVER use tampons during an infection or with unusual discharge as the bacteria responsible for TSS may be more likely to be present within your vagina so significantly heightening risks. Doesn't matter if you're changing every 2 hours - the idea that TSS only occurs after 8 hours is total and utter myth, it can occur within 2 hours, so there is still significant risk.

If you want a mess-free way of inserting the yoghurt the best way is to freeze the yoghurt into ice cube trays (acidophilus can easily withstand freezing) which also makes them extra soothing if experiencing burning or itching. Some yoghurt will also come out over your vulva.

To avoid mess use pads - commercial pads like Always should be avoided as chemicals will irritate and synthetics/plastics will prevent air flow making you uncomfortable and giving yeast the perfect breeding ground. Use cloth pads like Lunapads if you can, or at least cotton pads like Cottons which are hypo-allergenic and allow for more air flow.

Or of course use other methods; garlic, tea tree oil, hydrogen peroxide rinse, gentian violet, cranberry/blueberry juice, acidophilus tablets, boric acid, or any over-the-counter treatment.

ChunkyPickle · 27/02/2011 04:44

Anyone else wincing at the thought of any of those on their nether regions ?

ChunkyPickle · 27/02/2011 04:47

although I'm now sitting giggling at the thought of my DH's face if I dyed them with gentian violet...

hairylights · 27/02/2011 19:47

Hydrogen peroxide as opposed to a tampon overnight, with natural bio-yoghurt on it? crazy!!!

hairylights · 27/02/2011 19:48

Sorry. To correct my previous post - dip a tampon in live bio natural yoghurt, and insert in at night, removing it in the morning.

Works every time for me where canesten fails.

Seona1973 · 27/02/2011 20:01

notasausage you can use the pessary while pregnant. p.s. Canesten cream has clotrimazole as the active ingredient

notasausage · 01/03/2011 21:02

The bio yoghurt seems to have done the trick. Didn't feel like it the next day but the following day was much better.

Was a bit worried about the tampon when no period but there's no way I'd put hydrogen peroxide near my lady bits!

Think I'll go down the pessary route if it comes back though.

I'm using natural yoghurt at the moment for mild thrush, using a medicine syringe like ones that come with kids medicine to insert it and using bamboo csp. I don't like the idea of tampons when you have an infection there.

Imnotaslimjim · 02/03/2011 11:20

I've just been pointed here by mumface. I don't have thrush, but I have got unbalanced PH, so going to give the yoghurt a go. I've been given metronidazole but I'd rather not take them if I can help it

notasausage · 05/03/2011 17:16

The medicine syringe sounds like a great idea mumface. Might try that if I use it again.
