I've been called in for an MMR jab - I'm 31!!!

I received a letter yesterday from the docs saying that they don't have any record of me having any immunisation from measles, mumps & rubella! Took me by surprise! I definatley remember getting a rubella jab at primary school (I remember all the girls getting taken out of class and leaving the boys behind) and my Mum is convinced I got immunised when I was a baby, she remembers telling them that there is epilepsy in the family (I assume this was a factor at the time). I phoned the docs today and told them that I was pretty sure that I have had the jabs (individually) but the receptionist said that I will need this one as the type of immunisation wasnt available at the time for my age group!?! Surely,if this was the case, then everyone who was born before the combined MMR vaccine came in to play would be called back!! The thing that is playing on my mind is that the leaflet that they enclosed suggests not to get pregnant for at least a month after the jab - we're TTC at the moment, but also I know the risks involved with german measles in pregancy. I'm so confused, can anyone shed any light on this? Thanks

how random! how old are you? (if you don't mind me asking)

i am 30, and had the MMR just before i started secondary school, when i was 10/11 so that would have been 1990/1991

you CAN be tested for immunity...

BaroqueAroundTheClock · 23/02/2011 21:08

I'm also 31 - and definitely had my MMR just before starting secondary too

IfAtFirstUDontSucceed · 23/02/2011 21:12

I'm 31, I don't think the MMR was available while I was at school, but am sure I've had them all individually. Will ask about the immunity testing. Thanks!

MMR was introduced in the UK in 1988

sparklyblack · 23/02/2011 21:18

I think the effectiveness can wear off from certain jabs, leaving you unprotected, so that may be why. Though then like you say, surely everyone would be called back and not just you. Not much help sorry!

nymphadora · 23/02/2011 21:22

32, I was injected against it though can't have been MMR.

monstermissy · 23/02/2011 21:24

Im 33 and had an MMR jab (well two a month apart) it was for work. I work in hospital do you? Its a new thing apparently.

Imnotaslimjim · 23/02/2011 21:25

I had to have the MMR's individually at age 9 due to epilepsy, the combined one was available but there was contra-indications with epilepsy drugs at the time. I'm just about to turn 30, so will be based around the same sort of time

They can't force you to have the jab, the choice is entirely yours. Can your mum remember whether you had any of the childhood illnesses? I did, but due to the epilepsy and other issues they decided I needed the jabs just to make sure I was protectedHmm

Bumperlicious · 23/02/2011 21:29

I'm 29 and I'm fairly sure a few years ago I was called in for an MMR as iirc there was low immunity from when I was growing up and a local epidemic of measles or something.

IfAtFirstUDontSucceed · 23/02/2011 21:35

I don't work in health care. My mum remembers being asked about the epilipsy, but as it wasnt in the immediate family (uncle) it musnt have been an issue. I definatley had the rubella jab on it's own when I was about 11, can't remember any other jabs apart from TB in high school. I suppose it doesnt hurt to have it, I think it's just the TTC issue that's putting me off.

According to Mum I've never had measles or mumps(just good ol' chickenpox).

I'm your age and only had MR (no mumps) when I was younger. There was a mumps outbreak when I was at university as a postgrad and we were all called in for MMR, whereas the undergraduates were covered.

DaisySteiner · 24/02/2011 08:30

You can ask for a blood test to check your immunity to them all and then get the jab if necessary. If you're TTC it's probably not a bad idea to get your immunity to rubella checked anyway.

CMOTdibbler · 24/02/2011 10:39

There was a bit in our local paper last week saying that there was a mumps outbreak, and they were advising people in the 25-35 age band to have MMR because of that

systemsaddict · 24/02/2011 10:43

I work at a university and they were calling people in last year aged between ?25 maybe? and 35 because of a mumps outbreak.
