Help - what is this? Has she got chicken pox???

Hello

Just undressed dd for bath and noticed three big bright red blotches on her lower back.

The largest is 1.5 cm long, she said they itch but then I asked her if they did and she would usually reply yes to a question.

She is 2.5 years old and I am 11 weeks pregnant.

How do I know the early stages of chicken pox, she has been waking crying in the night for the last week and last night had us up 4 times. When asked if her gums or tummy hurt she repied "no". She is normally a great sleeper and never wakes so maybe the rash is related.

Could it be chicken pox?

What else could it be?

Am I in danger - I am 11 weeks pregnant???

i dont think it is as they dont come up in blotches they will be obvious spots if its chicken pox. Due to pregnancy i would get it checked out though just incase but it could just be dry skin, excema etc.

if you already had chicken pox as a kid it doesn't matter

milward · 17/10/2005 19:40

when my dds had chicken pox it began with one red spot followed by sudden appearence of loads of red spots. Not itch at first but once they started to oose gunck then they were itchy.

i am so worried as i went to see my friend today who has just given birth 10 days ago, my dd was holding and kissing the babies hand.

they are not spots and more shaped like uneven blotches.

they are so red!

she does not normally suffer with dry skin or anything like that.

i will def take her to the gp in the morning to check if i should send her to the nursery.

should i call my friend and tell her or wait until i see my gp?

Insect bites or allergic reaction to elastic or washing powder ?. Sounds a bit large for cp - more like spots than blotches iyswim.

Have you ever had cp, if so you are probably ok but worth a call to midwife. They can test you for antibodies if needs be.

dont panic your friend uneccesarily but inform her if you find out it is something sinister, it could be red cos shes been itching it

twirlaround · 17/10/2005 19:46

is your dd a bit off colour?

And don't worry re the newborn - v young babies have their mothers immunity so its rare for them to get it!

lovecloud · 17/10/2005 19:50

just trying to think is he has eaten anything different and dont think she has, i have been budgeting recently and switched a couple of weeks ago to sainsburys non bio but then that would have had an effect ages ago???

think i will just have to get her checked.

friend is not b/f but thanks for the reassurance

xx

lovecloud hows your dd this morning?

wantingtohelp · 18/10/2005 10:32

My two had chickenpox recently. Their spots were very atypical - not weeping or oozing at all (although definitely very itchy). They only had about a dozen spots each. In their case the cp was preceeded by a snotty nose (a fairly common presention of chicken pox)....

If you are unsure - do as you suggest and take her to GP for confirmation of diagnosis

CreepyJess · 18/10/2005 10:34

Sounds like eczema, lovecloud

ruty · 18/10/2005 11:07

lovecloud if you had cickenpox you're unborn baby is protected. but it doesn't sound liked cp tho - ask doc.

lovecloud · 18/10/2005 12:57

hello showed gp this morning and she said it is not cp but not sure what it is. she has given me a prescription for antibaterial cream and said it maybe the beginning of impetigo?

not sure what this is.

she said it is very common with children and that she can still attend nursery.

anyone else had this?

FangAche · 18/10/2005 13:06

LC - Impetigo is the name for a skin infection caused by a bacteria called staphylococcus aureus. Its more common in children, though can also affect adults.
Impetigo commonly affects the area around the mouth and nose. The reason for this is that 40% of people can carry the bacteria harmlessly in their nose. The bacteria can fall out of the nose to infect the skin nearby, so the areas around the mouth and nose are the most common areas to be affected.

lovecloud · 18/10/2005 13:17

oh - its on her lower back... thats strange.

maybe its not that then.

it does not look like a reaction to cheap washin powder asi use to always get this and i would have flakey itchy areas on my skin.

her marks are just three red raised smooth blotches.

OP posts:
LIZS · 18/10/2005 13:22

If she has scratched her back because it has been itching that could have affected the surface of the skin enough to let the bacteria in. ds got it whne he ahd a runny nose that made his face sore. Surprised about dr saying about being able to continue at nursery - check their policy as it spreads easily and they are iften excluded for 24/48 hrs with ab cream - but if she is clothed it may not be so contagious.
