kideny stone help anyone?

Any advice / experiences appreciated!

Began having sharp, constant pain upper left abdomen going through to back that would last several hours, then go for a few, repeat 16 dyas ago. After 3 days it was bad enough to have 2 days off work. GP said kideny infection, got anti-b's.

Pain continued, a week later went back to (different) GP who said kideny stones indicated by results of preious urine sample- some blood, no infection (although dipstick test was +tive for protein?) Referred for scan but couldnt get appointment for over a week.

Appointment is tomorrow afternoon, but pain has been getting much worse, also been painful on right side sometimes. Was crying with the pain theis afternoon. Been wondering wether to go back to GP or just wait it out? Or try to get GP appoint for after scan- the scan is at GP surgery.

Sooooo fed up of the pain. Its making me a really grumpy cow too, my poor boys are bearing the brunt of it :(

I suffer from recurrent kidney stones, this sounds like it.

Tbh I would go to A&E if I were you - the pain just gets worse and worse and can rival labour pain. I often end up on pethedine or diamorphine for it, but there are other things like strong anti-inflammatories you can be given (Voltarol usually).

If you do stay home, take a huge dose of ibuprofen (600mg) and drink as much water as you can - the more you drink, the more you pee, the faster the stone comes down your ureter. Once it has passed, you might hear it "chink" into the loo. If you can bear it, find it, cos analysis of the stone can explain why you got it in the first place (but I understand that is gross - in hospital you would have all your urine collected and sieved to find the stone!)

But do consider going to hospital. They might just treat you in A&E but would probably keep you in - you would be so much more comfortable with proper painkillers.

I really feel for you, I've had these (mine are hormonal, started in pregnancy) for 9 years on and off and its horrid!

Get seen now, I agree with weegiemum, go to A&E.

I also suffer from recurrent kidney stones, but for me it comes on very quickly and builds to an unbearable pain which makes me vomit and the only place I ever go in A&E for their lovely morphine Grin

Even if it's just a kidney infection, this is also horrendous, and you may well have had the wrong anti biotics. This also happened to me once and apparently it's common as there are two types of anti bio's to treat these infections and sometimes GP's get it wrong. Not sure how or why just drawing from memory what the GP told me when my mum wheeled me back in there after another week in bed feeling like I was dying.

Do not wait, go and be seen now, you need someone to have a look at you as you are obviously not right.

Best of luck, and you have my every sympathy.

weegiemum · 22/02/2011 19:49

Comes on really fast for me too Dolly, I have passed out with the pain or vomited in the street as it just comes over me. And it is unbearable!

I wish they could stop it. I once asked my urologist to take my kidney out as it was causing so much pain, but "apart" from the stones it functoins really well, so they wont!

DaydreamDolly · 22/02/2011 19:56

God they are the devils work aren't they. I have such a fear of them returning, every twinge brings me out in a cold sweat!!
I must admit I was supposed to do a urine analysis, collect my pee for a week in a big bottle - but fell pregnant very soon after seeing the urologist and never bothered to do it Blush
I understand however that although it may prove what type of stone and give me tips to avoid them coming back, that they will probably still come back anyway??

oh thanks all, just hearing your words makes me feel much better! Interesting you said hormonal weegie, I had some tests a couple of months ago as I started producing milk again, and had 2 different odd blood hormone results. Its eased off for the minute but I am dreading it returning later. Think if it gets as bad in the night i will go to a&e. Oh, have also been very shivery / goosebumps with the worst pain despite nearly having a temp?

How are you?

Shivering/rigors can be related to the pain.

I started getting stones in pg No2 thought he docs think I was forming them in the first one but never passed any. Had them for 11 months after ds (dc2) was born). Then got very unexpectedly pg again with dd2 - I knew I was pg before I did the test as I had a stone. Had them almost daily through the pregnancy and went on sporadically for 2 years after she was born. They went pretty quiet for a few years unless I picked up an infection (my internal sphincter on the left side was damaged by passing so many stones) until about 18 months ago.

Have now been diagnosed with premature menopause, causing hormonal surges (for 2 years I have had a hellish period every 4 months with 4-5 weeks of stones surrounding it). They wont do HRT in case it makes the stones worse. the pill and the mirena did. So I obsessively hope my ovaries will die off soon (I'm 40) and I can have a normal life again, not worrying about every twinge in my back or groin.

I'm apparantly very unusual though - have even been presented at a conference by my consultant - so don't think it will happen to you!

plusonemore · 23/02/2011 09:03

oh god weegie you poor thing sounds like a nightmare! I'm so so, thanks for asking. Managed to sleep most of the night. Just trying to have a big breakfast now in preparation for 6 hours no food before the scan (but why oh why cant i have a drop of milk in my tea? Sad )

Am dreading them saying "no nothing there, you'll just have to put up with the pain whatever it is". Although equally dreading it passing- is it more painful than the pain at the moment?

I'm another recurrent stone sufferer, although touch wood it's been a while.

You could ring your GP and ask for a prescription for something stronger, they'll probably give you Volterol. I find it takes a good hour to work, but once it does it will help a lot, apparently it also has a preventative element to it as well (is an antinflamatory).

Nurofen and paracetamol don't really touch the pain, so please get something stronger.

Other than that a hottie helps.

DaydreamDolly · 23/02/2011 09:48

Weegie that sounds truly hideous you poor thing Sad
Plusonemore, glad you're not feeling too bad today. In my experience, the stone had broken up so I didn't feel it when it passed. Good luck with the scan, let us know how you got on.

plusonemore · 23/02/2011 16:10

No sign of stones, so either v small, passed, or non existent. Just waiting to see gp hope to get something for pain
