Mammogram result - recall for an ultrasound

I had my first mammogram 2 weeks ago and have just had a call from the doctor saying that I have an 'opacity' on my right breast and need to go for an ultrasound. They are contacting me tomorrow with an appointment to see a breast consultant.

Not sure if I should be panicing or not!!

I am 40 and the nurse who did the mammogram warned that I may get called for an ultrasound as between 40 and 50 the mammogram sometimes gives inconclusive results.

Since she rang I am now convinced that I have been feeling crap for weeks and that I have something seriously wrong with me...

Any experiences....advise??

Please try not to panic - women under 50 have very dense breast tissue which is sometimes difficult to analyse on a mammogram image.

I'm sure they just want to get a better look using the ultrasound given your age.

Try not to worry though - I know this is easier said than done Smile

The recall rate is much higher on your first mammogram too as all our breasts are different, and obv that means quite a lot of women have things that look odd on mammograms, but are normal. After the first mammogram they can check against those xrays to see if there is anything new

You are likely to be seen quite quickly - within a week or two. The consultant will examine you to see if there are any lumps and you will have an ultrasound. If they see a shadow on ultrasound they may put a small needle into it whilst you are there to sample some cells. If the ultrasound is normal they may repeat the mammogram with special compression techniques to spread out the breast more. As kju said you may just have dense breasts and as it's your first mammogram they have nothing to compare to. Or it might be something like a cyst which are extremely common.
Try not to panic - it's very likely not to be anything sinister.

My best friend had breast cancer at 35 (five years ago). Double masectomy, herceptin, chemo, wrecked marriage, no chance of a family. She was given the 'all clear' six months ago and then last week found out that it has spread to her lungs and has been offered palative chemo and maximum of 12 months to live.

Think that this is affecting my response to this mammogram recall. Am trying to be positive, but struggling! Have been thinking about what my DH would do with DC's if I was not around. V morbid....

So sorry about your friend. Your reaction to the mammo recall is totally normal and understandable. But remember that the odds are in your favour. Hopefully the appointment will be soon so you don't have to stress for too long. It might also be a good idea to take someone along to the appointment with you if at all possible for moral support.

I now have an appointment for 9pm (!) On Monday, so only a few days to wait.

Hope all goes well for you.

Probability is high that it will just be a standard recall and everything will be okay. We'll be thinking of you though, good luck.

Just got back from appointment. Extra mammogram scans taken, ultrasound (v weird on a breast when you have had children - i kept expecting a heartbeat to appear!!) and then an session with a consultant.

Told all is fine and just that the original mammogram was taken at not quite the right angle.....

Then home for a large glass of red and the relief that I would not be saying goodbye to my DC's....

Has made me reevaluate life though...

(all the ...'s are due to the glass of wine!)
