Really angry Re: Flu Vaccine.....risking my DH's life...big rant & I'm really scared

OK before we start this is not about bird flu, avian flu or an other nonesense.

My DH gets a flu vaccine each October as a regular thing, he is a chronic asthmatic and "at risk" a cold can put him in hospital - flu doesn't bare thinking about.

I phoned my GP in Sept to be told ring in Oct, I rang on the 3rd to be told ring on the 17th

I rang today and was told they had only got 50 vaccines and they had all gone. They might get some more on Nov or Dec but they aren't sure

What the Hell do I do now? Can I buy it? Do I go private? Help me someone please?

Phone around for private is probably best but keep yourself on the waiting list for the NHS one. Superdrug near us does the flu vaccine but hardly anyone else But if you have a private vaccination clinic nearby I'd have thought they'd do them.

freakyzebra · 17/10/2005 11:32

Boots offers them, too (or so I've been told).

katymac · 17/10/2005 11:32

So can you buy it over the counter or do you need a prescription?

OP posts:
futurity · 17/10/2005 11:33

boots do them...well they did last year when my husband had one done this way.

it was a big boots and they had a clinic set up..he made an appointment..filled in a form and then had it.

katymac · 17/10/2005 11:34

Boots have sold out and can't get any more

What am I going to do?

OP posts:
GeorginaA · 17/10/2005 11:38

Superdrug you have to fill in a form then go in to have it done I think. Still waiting on the list before they get them in here. Think it's supposed to be early November time - so not surprised there's not much about - seems to be a supply issue this year.

GeorginaA · 17/10/2005 11:39

Is there a Direct Health outreach clinic near you?

expatinscotland · 17/10/2005 11:41

Private clinics. We bought them for £15/each.

ruty · 17/10/2005 13:20

please don't think i'm dismissing what you say, i'm not, and i agree your dh should be a priority. But just while you are looking there a re still things you can do to protect him. I am asthmatic and used to have it very badly. I found cutting out dairy very beneficial, as was taking a supplement called NAC [solgar do a good one.] It worked brilliantly on me and it is very good for chest infections too. Vitamin C and echinacea are also very important. You may do all of these or some of them already so sorry if obvious, but just wanted to let you know what helped me. i also wash hands and stay away from coughs in flu season - again rather obvious, sorry!

freakyzebra · 17/10/2005 13:21

Katy, don't you live in Acle? Are you sure all the Boot's branches near-ish to you have sold out?

katymac · 17/10/2005 13:23

Stay away from colds...we chidmind upto 15 children each week - no chance
But he is super careful on the hand washing (esp when out)
He does the dairy

He take a variety of suppliments (not echni - what ever - but he might start)

I hear ya, katy. I work with university students who come in w/all matter of bugs. And ride crowded, standing room only buses during rush hour every day of the week.

No chance of staying away from coughing, sneezing people.

ruty · 17/10/2005 13:43

its not great i agree, have had to ride the tubes and buses with sneezy coughy people myself, tho not since ds was born. I used to move if someone was coughing beside me, or try to hold my breath for 8 seconds [i read that somewhere!] and take the supplements i said before. But not so easy i agree teaching at uni or childminding.

PottytheVampireSlayer · 17/10/2005 14:31

We're in the same boat Katymac. Dd didn't get hers on Weds because she was unwell and now they've run oyt. We've got to ring on Friday but if they can't give me a definite date I'm going to get it privately.

katymac · 17/10/2005 15:46

How do I get it privatly - do I just ring BUPA?

I phone NHS direct - who are really shocked at what I'd been told - they are taking it up with the primary trust (what ever that is)

OP posts:
Milliways · 17/10/2005 21:01

I saw Superdrug advertising them for £15 today.

katymac · 17/10/2005 21:04

I'll ring them tomorrow

Do they do them at the store?

Or do I need to get someone to inject him

edam · 17/10/2005 21:33

There were production problems this year apparently because the World Health Organisation was late delivering key components (not sure that's the right word) to the vaccine manufacturers IIRC. But the Department of Health kept promising that although there were delays, there would be no shortages.

Get on to your primary care trust and complain loudly - it's one of those situations when those who shout loudest get dealt with first.

Milliways · 17/10/2005 21:59

Superdrug notice in window said to call in for an appt.
