Prickly heat rash - any advice please?

We're going to a hot sunny place on hol for 2 wks in Aug - which is lovely but...I suffer terribly from prickly heat and silly though it sounds it's actually making me dread going. Last yr we were away a wk and for over half that time I was so uncomfortable I couldn't relax, had trouble sleeping - and the antihistamines the GP suggested (Piriton) were totally ineffective. Does anyone know of anything that actually works?

Hi there

Have you tried other antihistamines? Not all suit everyone, my DD suffers from prickly heat and uses Certitizine very effectively.

Also, Prickly Heat can be hugely irritated by your sun cream! The waterproof creams 'seal' any sweat in and this is what causes the irritation.

I have seen 'organic' sun creams available here for eg but not tried them as yet. The best prevention for her seems to be to keep her completely covered

I suffered from PH for years I've found not using suncream on the affected areas (just keep them covered) and dusting them lightly with cornflour works best for me.
I also take a daily antihistamine if we are somewhere hot.

You used to be able to get Prickly Heat Powder from Johnsons (the baby oil people) but not in this country. I have a blood condition that means I get the pleasure of this every year. Long sleeve cotton clothes, If you do put on sun tan lotion wash off as soon as you come in, antihistamine - if you really suffer badly your GP can prescribe something for you to take well in advance. My trick is also to top up little and often in the sun as after about a month the problem abates so hopefully you will be aclimatised before August.

It's horrible and something I've always suffered dreadfully with.

Someone told me sometime ago about a homeopathic remedy called Apis Mel. I start taking this a couple of weeks before a holiday - the highest strength - and carry on taking them throughout the the holiday.

With this I use either Nivea or Soltan products for sensitive skin. Have never had it since.

if you get it Benadryl cream works really well. took some with me on hols last year and some people in our appartments borrowed it and said it was a life saver.

it took sandocal K for one week before i went away on hols and it worked for me but you would need to check with doc if you were on any heart medicines. a pharmacist recommended it to me. He didnt know why it worked but it did. i used to sit in the shade with cold flannels on my neck. it used to drive me mad for at least a week.

i also stated using sun tan milks and alcohol based sun tan preps to saty away from greasy ones that trap the sweat in
