Pain relief post c-section

Moomin · 16/10/2005 20:10

Had my 2nd c-section last Monday and I'm in a much worse state this time round than last time. I seem to recall I was on co-codemol last time when I came out of hospital but this time I'm on paracetemol and voltarol (and also taking arnica) but I'm still in loads of pain. The midwives don't think there is any particlaur problem as in a 2ndary infection etc, just that it's par for the course.

Can anyone recommend any alternative to the pain relief I'm on now to help things along? I've been in bed ever since coming out of hospital, only getting out to use the shower and loo. Even sitting at the computer is a bit much and the only real relief I'm getting is lying down.

Any suggestions for prescribed or non-prescribed would be good as I can always get a prescription written up for anything other than what I'm already on. Ta

i took the triple whammy of paracetomol (sp), ibuprofen and codeine for several days and then eased it down gently until i stopped the pain relief completley.

thats waht we give our ladies who have just had sections too. (if they are in a large anm=mount of pain they can be written up for pain relief supposotries, which apparently can work more effectivley, not sure how practical this would be at home though, with the business of putting them where they need to go!)

I had suppositories - dicofenac I think. Bloody marvellous!

sievehead · 16/10/2005 21:12

co-codamol, plus diclofenac worked for me. Keep on top of the doses, don't wait for pain to get worse, take it dead on time - it will get better in a few days. Good luck.

Caribbeanqueen · 16/10/2005 21:13

I had percocet - wonderful!

allhallows · 16/10/2005 21:17

I was offered morphine (on IV) but turned it down! I was terrified of becoming addicted. Bit silly, really. I was then given megadoses of paracetemol and a tranquilizer... Xanax, I think.

If you are still in unbearable pain in 24 hours, call your doctor. you shouldn't have to suffer needlessly.

NotQuiteCockney · 16/10/2005 21:18

diclofenac = voltrol, which Moomin already has. It's a good anti-inflammatory.

I'd add cocodomol, which is codeine + paracetamol. Makes you a bit spacy, but does really help. You can get it without a prescription - it's a behind-the-counter drug, though, they like to squint at you as you buy it.

And as others say, if you're in pain, take the maxdose of everything.

ChicPea · 16/10/2005 21:39

I was prescribed co-proximol and voltarol to take home but was told to try to avoid voltarol because of the side effects. I did stick to the co-proximol until I had a blinding headache when DS was two weeks. I took the voltarol adn the headache went but I had abdominal pains for 4 days after taking it. This was not from the op but from the drugs. I would never take it again. Co-proximol was very good.

NotQuiteCockney · 16/10/2005 21:42

Yeah, voltrol is hard on the gut. But I have mild IBS, and it's ok for me. I wouldn't want to take it for weeks, but it does help reduce inflammation from the operation.

Moomin · 16/10/2005 22:41

God I could quite happily have the morphine all day long - I had 2 doses: one given at the time of the c-s and one the next day.

I know it's not very p.c. of me but it was bloody lovely. In fact, I was thinking just yesterday that the definition of bliss has been the day of both my c-sections, having had the babies early in the mornings, then spending the day not having to move at all, weeing through my catheter and not feeling any pain whatsoever, looking at my miracle baby next to me and feeling completely blissed out on the morphine!

But that's besides the point.... I will send dh to the chemist 1st thing tomorrow for the co-codemol. Thanks. x

oh god the morphine... lol I thought that was just me
I had struggled all day on paracetemol and when the night shift came on they offered me liquid morphine
er, yes please......

NotQuiteCockney · 17/10/2005 07:48

The morphine made me sick - I threw up on my midwife, and my MIL. I had it after DS1, but refused it after DS2.

It's funny how different pain meds agree with different people. I love gas and air, but I know it bugs loads of people.

Hope the cocodamol sorts you out, moomin. Boots do an own-brand codeine + paracetamol, which is the same thing. It does make you a bit foggy and sleepy, but that's not a bad thing at this point.

My GP rang me yesterday to ask after me and the baby - I was joking with him about the lovely morphine and he said he remembers fondly how he and other med students used to use gas and air to get through nights whilst training on the obstetrics wards!

key with pain relief imo is to top up in anticipation of pain, ie don't let it wear off and plan some gentle movements so you're not frightened by the very thought of pain. found 2nd c/s more painful post-op too but was definitely off the voltarol within a week
