Maybe I should take the pain killers more often, I don't want to rely on them

OP posts:
ImFab · 20/02/2011 09:23

I also don't want to be taking too many pain killers so have the ones at night and no others. I have never been one for taking them generally so don't want to start now.

KatyMac · 20/02/2011 09:52

I'm doing some investigating about pain killers

OP posts:
MadameOvary · 20/02/2011 09:57

Oh painkillers - I have paracetamol, ibuprofen, diclofenac, dihydrocodeine and Tramadol right now.
(I do know what you can and can't take btw)

Dont like using Tramadol as it's an opiate but sometimes that is all that works.

I was referred to a pain management clinic which is great, can recommend it.

KatyMac · 20/02/2011 10:00

You see today I took a diclofenac at 8:30 & have managed with some tears to get through to 10 am - now I will take a co-codamol & based on yesterdays diary - that was exactly what I took yesterday

What that means, I have no idea

MadameOvary · 20/02/2011 10:59

Everyday is different though - for me the weather, menstrual cycle, even what I did the day before all impacts.
Painkillers are rubbish really, but what else can you do?
Chronic pain is a bitch.

KatyMac · 20/02/2011 11:23

It isn't the intensity of the pain (although it's fairly awful) it's the continuousness of it; I think

I haven't been painkiller free at least since Christmas & quite possibly for some months before; but it isn't a problem, as I only take a few Hmm

If the pain killers don't work maybe I should stop taking them all

OP posts:
ImFab · 20/02/2011 14:53

Have you tried heat pads. Mine don't always help but sometimes do.

hardhatdonned · 20/02/2011 16:24

Have you made a conscious note of how different medications affect you? For instance for me opiods make me spaced out and have an anaelgesic quality and put fluff round the pain, NSAIDS, on the other hand, i can feel taking the swelling out and get into the pain and knock it down.

There is no point taking medication that doesn't work. If nothing works tell your doctor.

KatyMac · 20/02/2011 16:53

I'm not sure the diclofenac is working positively anyway, it gives me a 'head' feeling

1 co-codamol takes the edge of it, but doesn't last for ever, 2 co-codamol makes everything woosy, paracetamol doesn't get there

I probably only ever take 6 co-codamol over the day, the diclofenac seems to make the co-codamol last longer but I'm not so sure the feeling it gives me is worth taking half as many co-codamol

I'm having a Fibro flare at the mo (great half term timing!) so many sympathies to you all.

I take 10mg Amitriptyline at bedtime, helps me sleep and takes the pain away (usually although some bits stay). Trouble is I can't take it long term due to the 'hangover' the next day. In the past I have had to pull of the motorway for a sleep which is worrying to say the least.

Anyway worth trying it if you haven't already done so.

I'm taking myself off for a walk later as feeling a bit better today - last month I was running and circuit training for a 10k race so it's really hit me having shit legs againSad.

KatyMac · 24/02/2011 21:22

Poor you

My brother has helpfully phoned & told me I have depression....gee thanks diagnosis at 1100 miles (he lives in Sweden)

They're great those helpful rellies eh?

Yesterday my Dad told me 'no pain, no gain' which after 4 sleepness nights is not what you need to hear eh?

KatyMac I hope your pain lessens soon...sending you a brewBrew and a biscuit Biscuit.

raphael7 · 25/02/2011 08:16

Have you looked into TMS..........it worked for me. John Sarno wrote a book about it but try the west yorkshire pain relief clinic website Georgie Oldfield.......Give it a try. It would take too long to explain. look at the website with an open mind.Im happy to chat x

FourFortyFour · 25/02/2011 12:03

laundrylover I have to take Amitriptyline 30mg a night and I am always tired. I was knackered before taking it though but definitely have brain fog but have been told that is because of the fibromyalgia that I have.

laundrylover · 27/02/2011 20:20

Hi 444, I can't take Amitriptyline long term as I literally fall asleep all the time! And that's on 10mg....I'm impressed you can take 30 mg...my GP told me he has people on 70Shock.

My flare up seems to be on the way out, thank goodness. I've had this for about 10 years and luckily I'm not bad most of the time. I sprained my ankle in Oct and it seems to have set my left leg off. Annoying.

Hugs to all of you....

FourFortyFour · 27/02/2011 21:18

I could go to 40-50 if I needed it. I am now on some other drug twice a week to try and help me have better sleep.

KatyMac · 02/03/2011 11:44

My results are back

The only one that is slightly out of range is ESR which is 55

& my Rheumatoid is satisfactory (still wonder if the diclofenac affects that)

hardhatdonned · 02/03/2011 18:08

Fibro folk try Cymbalta or Lyrica - or at least ask your GP if they are suitable for you. Lyrica + Arcoxia and i feel like a totally different person. Amitryptiline was diabolical for me.
