statistical thread - are you/your kids' father short sighted?

If so, are any of your kids short sighted & if so, how many?

I am very short-sighted, DH not at all. We have 4 kids & they are all short-sighted to varying degrees (though none as bad as me; my prescription c -10, theirs between -3 & -8)

This seems illogical to me but, as in the thread on teens' height, logic doesn't come into genetic issues I suppose! So I'm curious about how it is passed on.

(fwiw both my parents had perfect sight when young but my brother & I were both short-sighted Confused)

I am short sighted and so is DS (his prescription is stronger than mine). DH's sight is fine.

seeker · 16/02/2011 22:21

DP and I bot in the -6/7 range. Dd shortsighted since 11, ds fine so far.

The optician said that if both of your parents wore glasses before the age of 10, then you were almost certain to need them too. He said tha that was, as far as he knew, the only statistical certainty.

PomonaTodd · 16/02/2011 22:23

I am v short sighted (also about -10 - I get free sight tests anyway). DH has astigmatism. So far DS (7) and DD (5) have great sight.

My mum has a quite bad astigmatism and my dad had one pretty short sighted eye and one not so bad. My sister is slightly short sighted although didn't need glasses u til about 12 or so I think.

I presume DC will need glasses some time but am surprised it hasn't happened yet.

PomonaTodd · 16/02/2011 22:25

Wonder when DH started wearing glasses? Pretty sure if was before 10. I was 6 but think it should have been earlier.

Ponders · 16/02/2011 22:35

My brother also has 4 children, but only 2 of his are short-sighted - his DW has good vision, 2/4 seems reasonable to me - I don't understand why all 4 of ours were afflicted Sad

seeker, your optician's thing about if both your parents needed glasses before 10 makes a lot of sense - it's when one did & one didn't that it seems hard to predict!

Have any of you considered/had laser surgery? My 3 eldest all use contact lenses sometimes, as well as specs, atm Youngest can't have contacts because his eyes are dry; the dryness itself causes him no problems, but when he tries a pair of lenses they suck all the moisture out of his eyes & have to be peeled off - he is very sad about this & I wonder if the dryness thing means he won't be able to have laser surgery either. He loves playing football & specs are not good for that

I am short sighted, I've no idea of my prescription but it is medium I think.
DD is also short sighted with about the same level as me. DH is long sighted, probably age related. He also has astigmatism.

Ooopsadaisy · 17/02/2011 08:23

I am very short-sighted -7/-8. I needed glasses at 11 (although I didn't admit it). Am now 42.

DP has perfect eyesight (bastard).

Both Dcs (teens) recently tested as ok.

I hoped they had got their Dad's genes and it appears they have (so far).

dottyaboutstripes · 17/02/2011 10:12

I am short sighted. I have six children and so far not one if them shortsighted. Two of them have specs, but are longsighted. One has a squint and another has been referred to see if he also has one.

DH has only recently started wearing glasses as he's getting a little longsighted

dh and I both have good vision, dd1 is long sighted, had a squint corrected with patches, dd3 is very short sighted, also with a squint. The other 3 ds all have perfect vision.

Ponders · 17/02/2011 10:38

it's seeming completely random so far Grin

My mum was very shortsighted; my dad wasn't. I needed glasses by the time I was 10 and was extremely short sighted, my sister didn't need them until she was in her 20s.

DH has excellent/long sight. DD is 6 and has been coming with me for the last 2 years to have her eyes checked when I have mine done and so far she has excellent vision, but I will continue to have her checked just in case.

I had Lasik treatment 10 years ago and now have excellent social vision but need glasses for driving at night and at stadium type events. My mum had cataract operations on the NHS when she was in early/mid 60s and they carried out Lasik treatment on her at the same time, so after all these years she now only needs reading glasses.
