I've had this bloody sodding horrible hacking chesty cough for about a week. The last one I had took about two months to clear. Am sleeping on the sofa cos I keep dh awake. Am taking Meltus which I thought worked last time. Anyone got a good suggestion? Would be eternally grateful.

try a tea spoonful of manuka honey (about £7 a jar but worth it Smile ) 2-3 times a day.

Nothing ime, you have to just let it clear itself. Sympathies, it's horrible.

ooo, someone else to share woes with. Sorry you have this too. On my 10th day (following dd having it for a week before me) and I am sooo tired. Night nurse worked ok but left me feeling stoned. Brandy did not work. honey and lemon did not work. Clarityn did not work. Dark chocolate did not work.

Tonight I am going to try codeine - I have some still in date from a couple of years ago. It makes me thick but who the hell cares. I cant keep going like this.

I had this on and off all through the autumn so massive sympathy from me. If it really has lasted and can't be shifted then see the doctor for antibiotics - yes they don't want to hand them out willy nilly but if it can't be shifted that's the next step. I also ended up being prescribed steroids because I have asthma - they worked quickly.

I know it's very hard to get a doctor's appointment (tell me about it!) and most people find it easier to just sort themselves out, but for me only prescription things really worked. Do consider it. One strategy I have used if your GP practice is like Fort Knox is to go to a walk-in centre that is attached to a GP practice, as you will be seen by a nurse but there are doctors on site who can write a prescription for you if the nurse thinks you need it but can't write one her/himself.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 17/02/2011 08:46

Might be an idea. I dont have asthma, but dh and dd do. I did my peak flow and its down at 330. I've an inhaler from a nasty virus a couple of years ago (also still in date) and I can get the peak flow up to 390 with that.

Sorry Dawntbabe - bit of a thread hijack. Hopoe you had some sleep last night.

usedtobeyoung · 17/02/2011 08:46

pholcadine (sp.) you can get it over the counter and it really works, but unfortunatly the more you use it the less it works. Is good for meetings or a good nights sleep.

Dawnybabe · 17/02/2011 19:48

Just got back to thread. Thanks everyone, anything that let's me get some sleep would be bloody brilliant. [hugs] to everybody that is suffering too.

FWIW, I find Benelyn Dry Coughs works very well for me. Less of a total mallet than NightNurse, though I only take it when desperate - for lesser (dry irritating) coughs, I find the kids antihistamine ones (Medised or Benelyn Night Coughs for children) works ok.

Pholcodine ..ask for it at the chemist
