Asthma- think it's flared up

I have asthma have done for years, but it is very well controlled, and usually only kicks in if I get a chest infection. In the past year my overall stamina has increased and I find I don't need to take my ventolin inhaler when out for a walk as much(especially when climbing). I got dishcharged from asthma clinic last year.

Anyway, for a few weeks now whenever I speak to my mum on the phone she says I sound out of breath. My peak flow has consistently been between 450-600. I took it this morning it's 550.
Last night Ds1 commented that I sounded like I was out of breath too. Yet I don't feel it.
However, this morning I have woken with a cough. It feels chesty, but I am not bringing anything up, and I have increased my ventolin and started back on becotide. But I am jsut a bit worried that it's starting up again. The cough is concerning me a bit as I havne't had a cold, catarh etc for a while, but haven't felt great (Fibromyalgia has flared up, had a few headaches, fatigue etc) for a couple of weeks

I don't think I am making any sense am I?Grin

Go to your GP for a check and ask about some of the more "modern" treatments such as symbicort and seretide which are basically a mix of steroid and reliever they seem to work much better at permanently controlling asthma. Some GP's are loathe to prescribe them as they cost more but Seretide has totally transformed my DP's life since he started taking it about 6 years ago (an Aussie colleague told him about it and he had to twist GP's arm but he has never needed steroids/A&E/Antibios since).

My asthmatic DD seems to be getting something like you recently. The GP has given her antibios even though no catarrah and good peak flow (though her peak flow is often good when she feels bad)she seems breathlessa lot of the time - we have even paid to see the consulatant at the hospital privately and for x rays etc - no one seems to be able to diagnose it other than suggesting a "virus"

It's the breathlessness (and the fact that people are commenting on it) that's bothering me.
I always used to struggle walking long distances/up hills etc, but recently was managing them fine. Yesterday I noticed I was puffing going upstairs - but not bad enough to make me need my inhaler IYSWIM, I was sjut aware of being breathless. Even teh Dses have commented on it now

Hi, you say you have only just started back on becotide, so perhaps you could ask the doc whether you should take that daily to prevent flare ups? There are stronger preventers out there but I guess they have to be taken daily too to help prevent. Hope you don't have an infection.

I am woried that this ins't asthma but is in some way connected to the (very) high blood pressure I have and the meds i take for it.
Hopefully doc will get to the bottom of it

Have been on a nebuliser! Have got some antibiotics and a spacer for my inhalers

Oh glad you got treated! Spacer a good idea. Hope your infection/asthma gets better asap.

Doc thinks it's an infection which has triggered off the asthma. I've had becotide and ventolin for years, but have never been offered the chance to have a spacer so hopefully it will help

Yes I did. He put me on a nebuliser in the surgery, then gave me the spacer and antibiotics
