wait and see whether they blister and then scab over. then you'll know that it is.
if it is, stock up on things to do at home (new DVDs, colouring, toys, etc) and then you have to keep your ds at home for at least 5 days after the rash appears. this is to safeguard others from getting it (not just kids - if pregnant women, particularly in first trimester, get it, it's very bad news). have a look at www.nhsdirect.nhs.uk for more info about symptoms and treatment. Make sure you've got enough calpol in to deal with any temperature and get some calamine lotion, or glycerin and calamine cream for the spots, which will be massively itchy.
poor little love. thank goodness he got it early.

Calamine lotion or equivalent, tepid baths with a tsp of bicarb of soda, and take it as it comes. He won't necessarily be unwell.

You do need to speak to dr as you can't give Piriton (to alleviate itchiness)to an under 1 without advice but keep him away from others too until the spots are dried over, as it is an airborne virus so very contagious. Not sure they'll want him at the surgery.

if they blister, def the pox. my ds had it at 7wks, caught it from dd. found boots own calamine & glycerin cream worked best. the lotion goes everywhere but on the spot. lots of cool baths, bath half an hour earlier at night to give time to apply the cream before he gets overtired. keep him in until all the spots are scabbed. with our ds this took about 2weeks. also our ds had it worse on his head and face, so i bought some of those bodysuits that have poppers and cross over at the front so they didn't need to go over his head. they were good as they're easier to get on and off so didn't rub the cream off.

lalaa, is the new dvd for Dinker or her ds !?

Dinker · 14/10/2005 13:32

When you say stay in do you mean don't go to M&T groups ? Or do you mean house -bound? He doesn't seem unwell in himself.

I don't know what age you can give it from but piriton medicine is good for the itching and it helps them sleep.

LIZS · 14/10/2005 13:58

Stay in , sorry, it is very contagious and you don't know who has had it or who is at risk, but you coudl probably do a quick run around the block in the pram if it really deserted.

The absolute best lotion for chicken pox itching is Eurax. Fantastic stuff it was. From our DD waking every 20 minutes in the night to scratch her spots, we put it on and she just slept as normal so she didnt pick at the spots or anything. Its great. Calamine lotion barely touched it. But then she has eczma as well and calamine is very drying.
