Food After Tonsilectomy

My cousin has had her tonsils out and I'm going around to sit at hers with her for a few hours while her boyfried is working on Friday. I want to take some meals around for her, I wondered if anyone could suggest what might be suitable for her as she's in a lot of pain.

So far I am thinking soup, but need inspiration for flavours.

I have a tonne of ice lollies for her too.

Can anyone help?

Strangely, they say crisps and toast are the best things to eat - help the healing process by sloughing off dead cells and stimulating blood flow Shock. dd was only 2 when hers came out (and I know its a lot more painful for adults) but she ate very little for two weeks...went right off milk or anything gloopy (watch out with soups apart from the clearest of clear broths, as 'bits' will stick to her throat wounds and hurt - solid food might actually be better). She ate cold ham straight from the fridge, toast, and ice lollies - that was about it.

Cool soup might be better than hot?? I would ask her what she thinks she might like, because it does seem to vary from one to another...

My ds1 had his out not so long ago. He is 3. The doctors told use not to give him ice-creams etc as these leave a film on the throat.
Like elibean says, they do now recommend to give things like crisps, toast, dry cornflakes etc for the reason she has stated.
My ds1 had just the 1 day off of food and was back to normal the following day, I just kept him dosed up with medicine

It's got to be the scratchy stuff, otherwise you just get this huge build up of mucous and can end up with a nasty infection. It sounds counterintuitive but its true.

Aye, DS was off food for a good week, he nearly ended up back in hospital dehydrated because he couldn't eat. I might make her some pasta dishes if soups aren't really suitable, still quite soft and filling if you're struggling to eat. She's a big girl, nearly 20 now, but I feel like I need to look after her as she doesn't have her mum to be there, which is probably what I'd want feeling the way she does (and I'm 28).

Nope, not soup, or ice cream. Anything that will slough off the build up on the tonsil bed. Toast is the best thing, but any food that has to be chewed. The trick for the patient is to take pain killers 30 mins before eating, and use the anaesthetic spray she should have been sent home with.

I am an ENT nurse btw, so have loads of experience!

I was told to avoid chocolate at all costs as it sticks in the wounds and is the biggest cause of return cases in our unit apparently.

Sorry to tell you that pasta was the worst for dd - too sticky/soft and really hurt.

I think the pain levels depend a lot on individual, dd was in a lot of pain for 10 days till the scabs had fallen off and healed...but others bounce back much faster. Main tip is to tell her to stay absolutely on top of pain meds, and take them a few minutes before they are due - so she is never without some in her system. KEep it up even if it starts to feel better after a few days, because it often gets worse again before it gets better for good!

She's not said anything about any spray. I did tell her about taking the painkillers half an hour before trying to eat, they advised that with my DS too. She's staggering the ibuprofen and paracetamol too, to keep pain relief going.

I'm still clueless as to what to take round, lol. Not soup, not pasta. I can't offer her toast, it would get cold. The ice lollies will be good, my ex said that they were what kept him going to start with, and everyone sent at least a box round for DS, who of course rejected anything cold because it hurt, thus my freezer is now somewhat resembling an ice cream van.

What about nachos and dips or something like tortilla with chicken or chilli?
