Glandular Fever

Anyone had it as an adult? When did you realise it wasn't just a really bad sore throat and how did the doctor diagnose it? Did it take you long to recover? I am probably over reacting but I feel so terrible and have done now for a week, am thinking it may be this. Many thanks in advance...

I had it about 13 years ago.

You need a blood test.

I am not going to tell you my experience because everyone is different and I don't think it's helpful to set you worrying when you could easily just get a blood test and know.

Go to GP.

marriednotdead · 09/02/2011 12:14

Have you been in contact with someone who has it or did you consult Dr Google?

Blood test is the only way.

KangarooCaught · 09/02/2011 12:19

After I lost a complete weekend, my doctor lent in, smelt my breath, recoiled Grin & said 'sure looks like GF but only a blood test will confirm it'. Laryngitis, pharyngitis all feel similar imo.

I was 18, came home from university for the holidays and had been ill for a while. My mum took one look at me and whisked me to the docs. He looked at me and went 'glandular fever' and then did the blood test to confirm.

Trip to the Docs for you.

Thanks all very much for the responses. I have made an appt for tomorrow am. It is the swollen face/neck etc and tiredness plus unpleasant rash thing that is just appearing that makes me think I have it - worried about my 3yr old DD, think maybe I got it off her (just started nursery)I will take her with me too.

Thanks again.

I have it at the moment. Sore throat leading to loss of voice for 2 weeks. Got results from blood test last week.

vinorosado · 10/02/2011 21:27

Hi ninjj, poor you - I got it confirmed today also and have an enlarged spleen (confused)and they are running tests for hepatitus...did you have any of this? How are you feeling generally? How long did they tell you it would last? Hope you feel better soon.

I had glandular fever with an enlarged spleen when I was 16. It took a while for me to feel better, but eventually I did. I had very swollen neck glands, and groin area glands too. With extremes of temperature changing, and then was diagnosed later with scarletina on top of glandular fever?
I do hope you feel better and try not to worry about your spleen. Mine eventually went back to normal.
I think everyone is different but it can really knock you sideways, so try to rest up if you can x

nixnjj · 11/02/2011 16:09

Thanks for your concern, my spleen is fine but liver is enlarged so they are running liver function tests. If I'm honest I'm really struggling. DS is 6 so as helpful as he can be I still have to get him to and from school and keep on top of basic housework. Doctors have warned me that if I dont rest enough it will drag on. Rest and a good diet seem to be the doctors advise, all of which at the moment seem to be a pipe dream as I don't have the energy to do much more than throw something in the microwave and a shopping trip feels like climbing a mountain in heels.

Hope you are coping better and a speedy recovery for us both

marriednotdead · 11/02/2011 21:30

Glad you have a quick diagnosis rather than weeks of blood tests uncertainty. Not fun though, it can be quite hard as you're already realising Sad
You have my sincere sympathy.

DD developed this around New Year of Yr 11 so right on top of her mock exams. The test results showed Epstein Barr virus, which Barbara Windsor was diagnosed with not long after.

DD's liver was enlarged too, but it settled eventually. The exhaustion meant that she didn't manage a complete week at school for a good couple of months. I had to give her a covering note as some teachers were unhappy that she was moody (depressed) and would sometimes fall asleep in class on the days she did drag herself in. It was about Easter before she was totally well if I'm honest.

Please, both of you, get as much rest and support as you possibly can. It certainly will improve your recovery time.

Home delivery of shopping and someone to help with the school run sound ideal but I don't know if they're possible. Perhaps ask school if they know of anyone who could help there?

vinorosado · 12/02/2011 10:46

indigo barbie and married not dead thank you both so much for sharing your experience and for the reassurance. Yes, it is the Epstein Barr virus, or viral mononucleosis. Just worried about the liver results now (after 20 years of quite alot of wine!)

nixnjj I know exactly how you feel about even doing the shopping and the basics.

I have a 3year old and a husband who said this morning 'Aren't you better yet?' HmmHope you get a restful weekend, take care x

Vino really really rest if you can. Now that I am a lot older, I can only equate the tiredness that I felt when I had the Epstein Barr to that of early pregnancy, where I was completely exhausted!

What I'm trying to say is, I missed some schooling etc Not that I was trying to run a house and keep the kids happy! I hope you can get some 'me' time and by that I mean, stay in your bed and get enough rest. I hope it doesn't last for too long xxx lots of love x
