Anxiety Disorder

I've just been signed off with an anxiety disorder. Have had similar issues in the past but never as bad as this.

This has stemmed from mainly from work stress.

I work three nights a week, going in tonight because I'll feel bad leaving them short staffed with no notice.

Hoping to get all of my houseworky jobs done today so that I have the whole week to relax.

Problem is I've forgotten how to relax. If I sit down I'll suddenly think of something that needs doing.

How do other people unwind?

Step 1 Don't go into work tonight!
If you go in they will think less of you because it will look like the doctor does not know what she/he is talking about or as if you just want time off.

Housework is good for me as it takes my mind off my anxiety!

As for unwinding - walk walk walk as much as you can. I find it's excellent for relaxing especially when you do not feel like you can.

Best wishes.

Hey MG,

I have an anxiety disorder-almost 15 years now...sigh. Don't get me wrong most of the time I am 99.9% fine, but relapse every now and again. The only thing that worked for me was taking medication(citalopram), CBT, no caffine ever, no smoking and being really kind to myself. Hot baths, self massage, herbal teas, gentle exercise, fun.Oh and staying off work when ordered by the doctor!

Hope you feel better soon :)

I have had anxiety disorder as well but ACT has worked for me, have tried citalopram in the past too and think it did help me as I was also doing ACT therapy at the same time. CBT didn't work very well on me though, but it does work for some other people. I'd also say avoid caffeine and take really good care of yourself, including going to bed early and getting enough rest - it can mean prioritising such that you take precedence over all the chores/tasks that you have to do. Its hard I know... but trust me, there will always be work to do at the end of the day, work never ends and sometimes its best to give up the notion that I have to finish doing everything before I can take a rest. For me that was a big lesson to learn. Get well soon :)
