Worrying about mole removal

I've got absolutely loads of moles but hadn't really thought much of it until recently a friend had to have one removed because it was a new one which had just appeared. I went to the doctor last week and asked her to look at my moles just to check they're ok, because I have so many I really wouldn't know if any of them were new.

She said there is one right in the middle of my back which looks a bit dodgy so she'd like it removed. They do minor operations at our surgery so she said I need to make an appointment with the doctor who does surgery to see if she is happy to remove it (because its quite big) or whether I'll need refering to the hospital.

I wasn't worried at all to begin with but because I've had to wait a while for the appointment I've started to think about it more. I'm worried because the mole is right on my spine and think it will be really painful to remove. And I now keeping looking at all my other moles and a lot of them look irregular, although the doctor had said they were fine (although she couldn't have looked that closely at all of them).

Has anyone been through this? Just wondered how painful it was and what its like waiting for the results to see if it is a dangerous mole.

honestly its fine. The local anaesthetic might nip a bit but after that should be ok. Waiting for the results can be/ is stressy as it can take a little while for them to come through and in a way that's the worst bit. But the procedure itself is not too much to worry about. Good luck

Had one out under local and was back at work in less then an hour. Once is out, try to put it out of your mind until the results come back, after all skin cancer is the easiest of cancers to deal with, esp at the early stages and with the highest 100% op success.

I've had about 8 removed. The ones on my back were the easiest to do & heal. Worst bit is the local- it stings for a few seconds- then that's it.
Stitches (if you have them) come out about a week later...again, nothing to worry about.
It should heal quickly, though may itch as it does.
One of mine was melanoma- it was treated with further surgery & I've been fine ever since :) .....that was 16 years ago.
Waiting for the results isn't always easy, but the chances of it being anything untoward are slim, and these days treatment is swift & usually successful.
Good luck.

I had one removed from my forehead. The worst part was having the local. Similar to having an injection at the dentist.

Just kept busy really and tried not to dwell on the results.

Thanks for your replies. I had stupidly googled it and read things that scared me. I'm worrying in case the moles on my back have been dodgy for a while and I only just know about them. Theres nothing I can do until my appointment so will try to put it to the back of my mind.

Oh gosh yes I've had tons removed. Worst one was on my inner thigh - that smarted a bit as it healed. I had one removed from my spine and yes the local anaesthetic is the worst bit definitely. And the itching as it heals I guess.

One thing to warn you, they tend to cauterise the bleed with a thing that looks a bit like a solder iron. And it smells like chicken feathers burning. Which is irksome.

LOL- my dr said "nice smell of burning flesh now" as he did mine on my shin!

I have had 2 removed- incl. one on my lower lipline. That was done by a plastic surgeon to avoid scarring.

My DH has had several removed fromhis back- no problems .

butterpieify · 05/02/2011 14:49

Gah. I need to do this.

I had one removed from the back of my knee, bit scratchy and sore but nothing to worry about - biopsy came back fine.
