Change in vacc schedule (mmr)

Hi,

I've recently found out that the NHS has changed the vaccination schedule for the 12/13 month jabs. It used to be HiB and Men c at 12 months and then mmr and pcv at 13 months. Now they want to give all these jabs at once, at 12 months.

I am no expert, but this seems like a lot of vaccines in one go! I am thinking of asking them to follow the old schedule anyway, I presume I can do this? Is anyone else concerned about side effects?

Also, someone I know took her one year old for his mmr and was told he would need another one in 3 months because there is a measles outbreak. Is this normal?

Yes FS, I've heard that too. I think there have been a few threads about it and other parents have the same concerns as you. You can get the vaccines when you want to though so you can decide to spread them out more. I think they just think it will save parents time or something to get them all done at once! Hmm

Tbh I don't know why it's ok to give different vaccines at the same time - if they did have a reaction how would you know which vaccine they reacted to?

Yes the schedule has changed.

You can ask the nurse to separate them though, it's entirely up to you. However the immune system can 'cope', and remember that they received 6 components at their first imms at 8 weeks.

In some areas that have measles outbreaks they recommend a booster sooner than the usual interval, to ensure maximum protection.
