I have had my marina coil in for nearly 2years. During this time my skin has got worse and worse! After a long time if complaining to the doctor about my skin, they decided to give me antibotics to clear up my skin problem.

O have been taking them for 20 days now and I have noticed that I feel very nausas and have a upset belly every morning for the last week - 2weeks. But strangely just in the morning.

So today went to discuss this with the doctor who was very unhelpful. She just told me to continuebto take the antibotics and the sick feeling might disappear and told me I will have to take them for 2months atleast possibly 6months.

I really think if the coil is causing problems maybe I should just take it out! Also I told my doctor that my period is 10 days late and does she think it could be related to the antibotics but she said that the late period and upset belly could be due to stress. But I told her I am not feeling stressed!

I had mine taken out recently, it was in to control painful periods. I felt sick and pmt ish the whole time and I feel so much better for it being out.

The very painful periods are right back but at least that's only four days of misery against constant misery.

If you want it out, then go for it.

You are prefectly within your rights to demand that the doctor removes it. It sounds like it's doing you no good at all. But, please don't try and do it yourself (I think that was what you were asking), you could well damage your cervix.

I agree that it seems crazy to take antibiotics for a long period as a treatment for symptoms caused by the coil.

Have you taken a pregnancy test? No contraceptive is 100% and you do have a lot of symptoms.

happenedagain · 03/02/2011 17:15

I wouldn't take it out myself, I would be way too scared to do that. I did a pregnancy test today and it was negative thank godness! But my period is still 11days late so I'm still wondering why that is...

I stopped taking the antibotics, the last one I had was Tuesday morning. And I didn't feel sick this morning or have an upset belly so thinking it was down to that.

I also had mine in to help with heavy periods, and I am worried how they will be if i have the coil removed. And what form of contraception I should use. As I don't think my body does well when adding extra hormones to it...

I've got the mirena coil, had it for almost 2 years now and has worked brilliantly for periods.
I am 51 now and have had skin problems, acne and now rosasea from being a teenager.
I got really pissed off in November as I constantly was battling some sort of spots probably since having the mirena.
Went to see GP and she had me taking 4 oxytetracycline tablets a day. 2 in the morning and 2 in the evening. I wasn't overly optimistic as I had had these when I was a teenager and they never really seemed to work, but I don't think the dose was so high. After 10 days my skin was so much better. I was told to go back to GP at the end of the 4 weeks and that GP said to take another 4 weeks of them, so 8 weeks total.
I now just put metro gel on my face at night time for the rosasea and have not had a spot since I stopped taking the tablets.
Long may it continue. If my experience is anything to go by try to continue with the antibiotics.

many people using the Mirena find their period s stop altogether- some like this, others don't.

LoveMyGirls · 03/02/2011 20:02

I had mine taken out after 4yrs because I had irregular periods and was fed up with them and thought I'd be better off on the pill so at least I would know exactly when my periods were due but after 5 days I was sucidal so I stopped taking it and had a copper coil put in but had it out within 3 weeks because it felt like a fishing hook was catching and tugging inside, the pain was so bad in the end I was walking leaning to one side to try and stop the pulling feeling. Being under 30 and neither of being ready to be sterilised we decided to have yet another look at temporary options having tried quite a few things in the past I weighed it up and despite really not wanting to I reluctantly had the mirena put in again, it's now been in for a year and it's great, my skin is good (previously had cream for acne, which I do still use sometimes tbh but my skin is nowhere near as bad as it used to be) I would say my pmt is worse and can last up to 2 weeks but I am trying to balance that with eve primrose and starflower oil but I no longer get periods, it's been 5 mths now and I have had 1 very very light one.

It's very hard imo and unfair we have to go through all this BUT having had 2 dd's and struggling financially and not having brought a house or contributing to a pension or any savings for dd's we really really cannot afford any more dc's but this is not to say we won't win the lottery and then want more so we're stuck with the coil for now.

Sorry for my waffling on!

Lovemygirls - what pill did you use?

I've decided to get the coil taken out, but now i need to decide what to use next

the mirina can give you bad skin and the abx can make you feel sick, it is your body if you want the coil out then you are within your rights to ask for it to be removed. you know your body better than anyone else.
i would have the coil taken out and persevere with the abx as your body may get used to them and the side effects may get better.

whomovedmychocolate · 05/02/2011 08:42

I had my Mirena taken out - well actually it shot out at a coil check - I had so many problems with it. The family planning clinic is your best bet. They will remove it no bother and will discuss your options with you. Is there any reason the contraceptive pill was not suggested to you?

happenedagain · 06/02/2011 22:15

They advised the coil to help my heavey periods and they have been much lighter. Also I thought it wid be better as I won't have to take a pill everyday. But now in thinking the pill would be better...
