Come tell me I'm being stupid and it's far more likely to be nothing at all.

I should probably name change for this... Sorry if tmi.

For the past six months or so I've had very heavy, irregular periods. Including mid cycle bleeds that are more like a period than anything else.

I use a moon cup, so I know that my periods currently run at more than 300ml each time. Today was 120ml on its own.

I've finally been to a gp about it. Blood tests show it's not my thyroid, it's not pcos (something I was diagnosed with seven years ago because I was sub fertile and they didn't know why), I'm not in any way perimenopausal. All fine.

I'm generally healthy, ideal weight, thirty, and i've got no real reason to think there's something serious wrong. I'm not a hypochondriac in any way, and usually just shrug things off, but i've got an ultrasound on Friday and I'm a bit scared to be honest.

I don't feel like I'm going to get an answer really. It's all probably nothing... But...

Tell me I'm stupid please.

:)

TIA

You are being stupid.

There, did that help?

Grin

Glad you've got your tests lined up - it will be fine, honest.

Fibroids?

I saw my GP last week for very heavy, irregular periods along with dull pelvic pain and heaviness, and generally feeling 'periody' constantly. My cycle has got much shorter over the last year.

He thinks I have fibroids, felt my abdomen and said the uterus was bulky and I am going for an ultrasound next Monday. I'm also anaemic probably as a result of the heavy bleeding so am on iron.

Maybe you have the same?

YouKnowNothingoftheCrunch · 31/01/2011 21:54

Thank you! :o

Funnily enough it did help.

In all seriousness, a very likely diagnosis is going to be dysfunctional uterine bleeding - charming expression, but nothing to worry about Smile. And it can be treated/managed.

Good luck for Friday.

YouKnowNothingoftheCrunch · 31/01/2011 21:55

Could be. That was my first thought, or cysts. Just want to stop having the stupid things and to have the all clear.

Oh, yes, or fibroids, of course

YouKnowNothingoftheCrunch · 31/01/2011 21:56

Thanks pd. That's what the gp said too. She's very sensible.

Sounds like when I had fibroids. You need a man (or woman) with a laser gun! Wink

You'll be fine. Wait for the ultrasound.

The really bad things tend to give pain and swelling as well as the bleeding.

YouKnowNothingoftheCrunch · 31/01/2011 22:04

That's ok then :)

I get a dull ache in my left ovary, but that would fit with a cyst, or could be unrelated. No severe pain.

Not for seven years. I hadn't thought of something like that. But it shouldn't be possible.

I don't think I was tested though. Will suggest it to gp though.

Thanks saf.

Pelvic USS is a good idea. Do you have DC and if so how old is the youngest. With that sort of blood loss they should be doing a full blood count if they haven't already and yes, swabs and a smear however recent your last one is. Chances are it's something fairly fixable with something like a Mirena. Hope all goes well and try not to worry.

YouKnowNothingoftheCrunch · 01/02/2011 06:32

Thanks mousie :)

Youngest is almost two. 3dcs in total. They've done a full blood count and I'm not anaemic, but then I had been upping my iron intake to counteract it. I'm normally quite resilient to illnesses, but in the past six months I seem to have gotten everything going. Not sure that's relevant.

I haven't had any swabs done, or a smear, and to my shame I'm overdue one (I know I'd be a lot less concerned if I wasn't so go get one people!). Gp prioritised hormone tests and the ultrasound.

Has it been this bad since you had your youngest? It's likely that with all the tests they'll know if it's something or nothing, and probably regardless, there'll be something fairly straightforward to do about it. You are doing really well to cope with such heavy bleeding. Fingers crossed for you!

TotalChaos · 01/02/2011 09:15

My first thought was fibroids as well, glad you have been referred for the scan.

AttilaTheMeerkat · 01/02/2011 09:19

I thought fibroids as well when I read your message.

Please do not worry unduly about the (presumably internal) ultrasound on Friday, have had more of these than I care to mention.

YouKnowNothingoftheCrunch · 01/02/2011 18:16

Thanks for all the replies :)

It's only been the past six months or so. I am petrified of leakage. Work is stressful if I'm worrying about it all. Thank god for moon cups. The largest tampons wouldn't last 15 minutes at peak flow. Awful.

I need it to stop!
