After suffering months of pain and other weird symptoms I've been diagnosed with a 2.5cm diameter cyst on one of my ovaries. I had a transvaginal scan and they want to do another in six weeks along with blood tests in the meantime.

Has anyone else had experience of this? I'm in pain and a bit cheesed off to be honest. Any advice would be good Blush.

I haven't had direct experience but a friend of mine had one during pg (and I think one when she wasn't) and both times she had an op to have it out. I seem to remember they talked about me having one when I was pg and they said that they just monitor and see if it resolves of its own accord (which mine did). Not sure if that's of any relevance though seeing as it's more pg related??

Thanks for replying zam72. I'm not pregnant (happily) as we've had our two DC and don't want anymore. I wonder how long this has been growing inside me? Shock I've not been pregnant for four years.............

Do they think that the cyst is causing the pain (these cysts can often just be an incidental finding)?
They will be re-scanning to see if there is any changes in the size or structure of the cyst. Cysts can be very slow growing and there for years. But they can also be fast growing.
The blood tests will probably include things like tumour markers such as Ca125.
The combination of the re-scan and the bloods will help to determine how best to deal with the cyst.
Speak to your GP or gynaecologist (if you have one)

I have a large cyst covering my entire left ovary.

They found it when I was 7 months pregnat during a routine scan. Since baby was born it has been causing me a lot of problems and I was rescanned a few weeks back (baby is now 8 months old) and it is still there and has not got any bigger or shrunk.

I have been referred to see a gynaecologist (3 weeks time) with the view of having it removed as pain has started to get worse.

Have you seen a gynaecologist yet?

What sort of problems has it caused? is the pain constant?

Hello hoomch and jester68 thanks for replying, was beginning to think I was alone in cyst world Smile.

I went to the GP with constant lower left abdominal pain, intermittent sharp stabbing pains in the same area and discharge different to my usual, for example I'd have bad stabbing pains and then a while later be flooding with watery discharge (sorry for TMI).

Got swabbed twice for the usual fanjo infections, nada. Glad to get the hospital appointment quite quickly, was seen within three weeks.

I've asked for my GP to call me when she's back in the surgery just to get the ball rolling with the blood tests etc.

No you are not alone!

I have exactly the same symptons as you only as the cyst is very large I also have constant preassue on pelvic area, tops of legs etc. Sometimes have pain like I have a water infection but they say it is the cyst pressing on nerves. And TMI now if I try and hold in a wee or number 2 the pain gets so much worse Blush

The discharge I have is also weird as sometimes is creamy, watery or even a yelowish colour but like you have been tested for everything via swabs and had a smear done. All clear.

I have to see the gyno in 3 weeks and have already been told as the cyst has been there for a while- has had no growth either smaller or bigger they will remove it. But have also been told as it is so big it will need to be proper surgery rather than keyhole which I am not looking forward to at all.

But I just want this pain to go as have had it for around 10 months now and it is just getting worse.

I too had the abdominal pains, mostly at night, and eventually went to GP who sent me for a scan. This came back showing a small cyst on my ovary. I was rescanned a month later but for some reason the pictures were unclear. My CA125 test showed it was higher than it should be.

I went to a gynaecologist today who basically said that the pain could be caused by anything and that many, many women have cysts. Most don't even know they've got them. They don't even bother with them until they are 5cm - mine is just over 1cm.

Basically he said he couldn't say what was causing the pain and it was my choice whether to have a laparoscopy. However having been told that the possible complications are damage to organs, such as the bladder or bowel, and injury to a major artery it's put me off slightly!

I am going back in a couple of months and will monitor the pain till then. Although the pain is quite bad at times I am a bit scared of the operation especially having a general anaesthetic.
