ds is really ill, he is coming down with a cold and has lost his voice. but Ive noticed that his breath stinks, not of bad breath iykwim, but its definately an ill smell. mine does the same, but Ive always put it down to weight loss (long story) previously. does anyone elses breath smell awful when they are ill? or is it something that I/we should get checked out?

My dcs' breath always smell when they are ill, its how I tell if they are faking or not! Its kind of a sickly, sweet smell.

I mentioned it once to a dr when dd was ill and he said he thought it was probably her tonsils but I'm not so sure as they have it whenever they are ill with anything. But its all 3 dc so I assume nothing to worry about in our case.

Has ds had it before at all or is the first time?

its the first time ive really noticed it, but he is very rarely ill. its odd you mentioned tonsils, because every time i get a cold I end up with larygitis and/or tonsilitis (should've had them out years ago) so it could be related to that. fwiw, i think this is the first proper cold he's ever had, but he could be like me and instead of getting common colds get full blown flu with chest infections, ear infections, laryngitis... blah blah blah..

I hope it doesn't turn into something much worse. But yes if GP suggested tonsils to me then that implies that tonsils do cause smelly breath when fighting infection.

Might be worth a trip to the Dr though just in case as I think there was a similar thread to this not long ago and someone suggested it can be a sign of something else (can't remember what, memory is utterly hopeless!) and as this is the first time you've noticed it its prob best just to make sure.

Hope your ds gets better soon Smile

If ds is ill, his smell always changes. Not just his breath, but it's like the chemical balance in his body has changed and he just doesn't smell the same. It's the same with dh. And I'm sure with me too. I think I have quite a sensitive sense of smell, but can usually smell when soemone close to me is unwell.

How strange, was just going to post tonight because Dd is ill and smells really odd! She just has a bad cold, but she is very rarely ill. Had to work today and when I came home could smell the change straight away!

dh always says he can smell when im coming down with a cold. but Im keeping ds off school tomorrow, so will take him to the gp I think.

My DD had tonsilitis when she was a toddler and the doctor said she could smell it on her without even examining her! I've come to recognise the smell now and know if she's trying to pull a sickie!!

If you're not eating, and therefore metabolising fat stores, your breath can smell of ketones - like nail varnish remover.

But I've also noticed with DCs that when they have sore throats/are snotty, they often have a pong about their breath that's not this.I always assumed it was bacteria growing in the excess mucus (boak).
