Movicol half - qu for the constipation mums

Dd1 (3y) has suffered badly for 18months and has been taking movicol paed plain fairly successfully for about 3months now. But she will only take it on her breakfast cereal and as it is best in liquid, we've been recommended movicol half (supposedly more pleasant-tasting). Duly organised prescription and collected today.
However, instructions say 'not recommended for children under 12' about upping dose for faecal impaction.

Anyone else's lo on this? Or can you shed any light? etc.

My ds has been prescribed the sachets. We went to Tescos and he chose some (normally forbidden) drinks to mix the powdwer in. Can you ring surgery in the morning for some clarification on dosage?

We're on Movicol Paed plain - or rather ds is. We make it up & then dilute it with orange juice. It seems to go down OK then. I've never heard of the 'half' one. Would be interested to here what you think of it once you have the dosage sorted.

ds (9) is also on Movicol Paed and we have it mixed with orange juice or squash. The max dosage for under 12 yo is 16 sachets a day we have spent several days on 12 sachets! cant you just hide it in strong juice or squash?

I wish we could hide it in drinks skc! SHe must have very strong tastebuds cos she won't drink anything with it in - we've tried t all, believe me!

My GP hadn't heard of it until I mentined it to him; it was recommended by the nurse at the local paed clinic so I'll ring them tomorrow.

we spent years trying to get picolax down my ds's throat until earlier this year when the GP miraculously told dh that Movicol was much better and less aggressive! (so why prescribe picolax then?)

horrid isnt it

My son has been on Movicol half for about 3 weeks as he was holding on to do a poo. He has it with juice each morning and is only on one sachet a day. Next week the doc will be weaning him off it.It got so bad that his anus wall was very expanded and apparently they lose sensation to poo and thats prob why he held on. Has anyone else weaned off it??

sassy · 25/10/2006 07:21

HI nards, i'm the OP on this thread and just wanted to say that you can wean off it.

DD has been more or less off it (with an occasional dose to keep things moving if she hasn't performed for a day or two) for 6 months now. No probs. She still doesn't poo every day, but is not troubled by this so I think this is her normal pattern IYKWIM.

And she was on daily lactulose for 12mo and movicol for 9-10 mo. It does work!

(One thing I was told by the paed is that we could expect her to need meds for about as long as she had the problem - they need to forget that it ever hurt to go. So you may find that your ds struggles again once he's off the movicol, in which case get the gp to put him straight back on it.)

My DS2 is on movicol pead plain sachets and has been on them since february. I am struggleing to wean him off it, he is on one sachet a day and I had managed to get him on one every other day butafter a week on this dose the constipation returned so we are now on 2 sachets a daytill he gets regular again. I shall then stay on 1 sachet a day for a few weeks and try half a dose a day to see if I can wean him off it that way.
I have mentioned my concerns to our GP who said not to worry because movicol is a 'long term treatment'
I havent heard of movicol half but then again DS just drinks it mixed with orange juice.
Hope your DD is better soon Sassy
