lump in the throat

Since Sunday I have felt like I hae a lump in my throat which makes swallowing, eating and drinking difficult. I have been given antibiotics by the dr and am now on day two but it is still very painful to swallow. My neck is very tender on the left hand side and I find it painful to talk.
I am a teacher and went to work on Monday but had today off and it looks like I will stay home tomorrow again :(.
What I am after is any advise on what I can do to help swallowing, strepcils, gargling and throat spray have had no effect. Anyone else had this? and anything that helped?
Thanks for reading, I guess I feel bad having time off work and would like to be better as soon as possible :(.
All advice gratefully recieved.

Can you feel anything with your fingers? Lumps in the throat can often be stress related - you know how sore and 'lumpy' your throat feels when you're trying not to cry?

Longer-term stress can cause something called globus pharyngeus. It's really common. I used to be a speech therapist and we saw lots of people with it.

Of course it could be something quite different - go back to the GP if the antibx don't kick it.

Thanks mistressploppy, it is funny before Christmas I would have said stress definitely at my old school but for the first time in ages I do not feel at all stressed. My new school is fantastic which is why I feel awful haveing time off.
If it is globus pharyngeus how can I treat it and feel better?
Thanks for answering.

what did the gp think it was?

She said either tonsillitis/laryngitis but very short consultation and shown the door with prescription in hand. Not very good with drs I meekly accept everything they say and apologise for wasting their time.

You'd need to tackle the underlying cause of the stress...so...erm..maybe it's a hangover? Seriously though, I'd try some relaxation, like yoga, or relaxation tapes, or something. You can also try neck stretches - gently ease your head to the side, and then let it loll forward, you know the sort of thing.

Try to let your tongue relax in your mouth - think for a minute now; where is it? Is it clamped up in the roof of your mouth? Let it relax and flop to the bottom.

You can grab your larynx (voice box/adam's apple, if you were a bloke) and gently push it from side to side, this helps some people release tension. Some find it gristly and minging though.....

Drink plenty of water.

gglobus is weird....you feel like there is a lump but you can still eat and it feels as if it goes up and down. if it is globus histericus it will go when you least expect it too.

i know its difficult but try not to worry about it and it will go. its when the muscles in your throat go out of synch when they contract
