Severe nappy rash on 2 week old

My dd is 2 weeks old and has dreadful nappy rash - spotty round the edges, but red raw and swollen elsewhere. Have tried sudocrem and graduated to metanium, but no effect. Trying sudocrem again now and as much nappy-free time as poss, but just wondered if anyone has found a miracle cure! Was using cloth nappies (washed in non-bio ecover) but have decided to go back to 'green' disposables to keep her drier until the rash has gone.

Camomile tea. It rocks.

Bepanthen.

Sorry to be dense, but what do you do with the camomile tea - drink it yourself, or bathe the nappy rash?

Brew a pot of chamomile tea then added a few drops of olive oil and a few drops of baby bath to it. Shake it up in an old jam jar when cooled then put it in a chinese takeaway container. Dunk flannels in as required. Apply to baby bum.

Metanium si good and have ehard you cna layer it with sudocrem too. However you may want to check it is n't thrush as you'd need a prescription cream for it then.

koalabear · 07/10/2005 16:39

andif - never heard of metanium not working - usually its a miracle cure - are you sure its not infected? get HV/MW to check just in case

are you using any particular cleaning thing on bottom, or just water and cotton wool/cloth?

Kittypickle · 07/10/2005 16:44

I wonder whether it's thrush, might be worth getting the doctor to have a look.

andif · 07/10/2005 16:46

HV just said 'that looks sore' but was otherwise clueless. I had IV antibiotics for Strep B at birth - could that have caused it? She doesn't have any other signs of thrush. Think I will see a dr if no better by Mon.

I think thrush can occur when you've had antibiotics. Have you had a look at her tongue ? Thrush can cause a milky looking residue on it - my DD had it after I was antibiotics for an infected section wound and I thought for ages that it was milk residue. I also think that a sore bottom can be the only symptom of thrush. I'm sure someone else will be along who knows more, but I think I would get the GP to take a look.

Maybe you could wash your nappies in another rpoduct

appaerntly ecover DOES irritiate lots of sensitive skins...

Surcare is supposed to be VERY good and unirritating...

also make sure you you give the nappies a goof hot wash 9as hot as they can be) and give them en extra rinse too to remove all traces of powder...

nappy rash is caused when the poo reacts with the wee, therefore change dirty nappies ASAP (im sure you do anyway!) there for its not really the nappies that cause it. Do you have some nice stay dry fleece liners that you can have on your nappies so she always feels dry.

Oh and fresh air is supposed to be the best cure... if shes so tiny you can prob let herhave lots of time lieing on old towels or pampers care mats!

could it not be thrush?

Mirage · 07/10/2005 20:17

Another vote for chamomile tea-I tried everything to shift dd2's nappyrash & this was the only thing that worked.

singyswife · 07/10/2005 20:21

Vaseline. My DD was terrible for sore bums then I discovered plain simple vaseline. It works wonders (combined with nappy free time obviously).

startingtobehalloweenylover · 07/10/2005 20:22

take her to the doctors. it could be thrush in which case no amount of cream will get rid of it
