Period every other week?

For the past 6 months or so I have had intermittent bleeding - either spotting (always fresh blood - sorry if TMI) or my period coming back a week or two after the last one finished. Since a few weeks before Christmas I have had a maximum 4 or 5 days without bleeding between each 'period' and the last one was particularly heavy (for me.)
My GP says she is not worried - it is the peri-menopause (I am 46) but I have read that all unusual bleeding should be investigated. I also don't feel as if I can cope with having a non-stop period indefinitely.

Any advice? Thanks.

I had this but when I had the Mirena coil and then again with the mini-pill. Do you think it could be your contraceptive?

We're similar ages, by the way (I'm 45), and this stopped for me when I stopped using the contraceptives.

I have a copper IUD with no hormones and have had it for 7 years, but I may ask to get it removed - if only to get a second opinion from the doctors at the clinic.

Sorry - forgot to thank you in the post...

I'd had Mirena for years with no trouble and then the two week bleeding starting. I can see why you would think that the copper coil wouldn't cause this though... I think you're right to get it checked out. Peri-menopause with no other symptoms doesn't sound quite right (not that I'm a doctor so what would I know).

See if your dr will give you something to stop the bleeding for two to three weeks and see if things settle down.

If not, it is probably hormonal and a new coil will help.

As long as you are up to date with smears, I wouldn't be massively worried. If you are, insist on a vaginal ultrasound to check out your womb and ovaries to rule out polyps or anything else.
