High blood pressure - have to go back later on today to have a re-check

I had my BP checked yesterday & it was 155/100
Have to go back to the nurse at 4pm today to have it checked again & if its still on the high side she said she will get the doctor to talk to me .
Will i be sent for tests or just put on meds ?
TIA

I think it might depend on your age, & any other medical problems, but probably just put on meds.....though personally I'd recommend pushing for tests too,

hypertension CAN just come on its own, but it can also be a symptom of a few other underlying conditions, which if treat can cure it without the need for the ongoing BP pills, hopefully your GP will be thorough without you pushing,

Thanks , i have kidney disease so i'm guessing the BP is a result of that but i'm terrified i will be put through more tests tbh

Do try to relax. there is something called white coat hypertension where your BP does increase in stressful situations, eg having your BP checked.
It does seem very high, so you're doing the right thing particularly in view of your kidney disease.

Ask the nurse/doctor what you can do to lower your blood pressure.

The list includes:
don't smoke
limit caffeine consumption
limit salt consumption
exercise
eat leafy green veg
stay trim - ie, not overweight
limit alcohol consumption

I think there are other things too.

rockinhippy · 20/01/2011 12:39

also Drinking Hibiscus tea..which is very nice, especially with a bit of honey can lower BP a bit (it helped with mine) & aerobic exersize is good too, if you can

Hate the "white coat hypertension" tag though (sorry KreecherBlush it meant my own high BP went untreat & not taken seriously for YEARSHmm

& yes kidney disease can be a cause, I;ve had problems there too ...but not the cause of mine, & it was a blood test needed to show thats all......

though with high BP AND Kidney history, it might be worth you asking for a blood test to check for high blood calcium & PTH hormone, as both together can be a sign of a parathyroid problem, which is easily cured

Thanks . I have been really stressed lately so hopefully thats all it is , fingers crossed it will have come down a bit by 4pm .

probably is just that then elmo maybe do some deep breathing exersize between now & your next check up & whilst waiting to go in, if you don't know it google "yogic breathing" & I'm sure you'll find som tutorials

good luck for later,

(& PS I hope your DS is doing better, I remember you from the problems he was having)

elmofan · 20/01/2011 13:03

I had a similar experience recently. Luckily my re-test was scheduled for a week later. I asked the GP what I could do to help. As well as the things indicated above he said to double my heart beat for 30 mins 3 times a week. I've done this..took a bit of effort to begin with but it was worth it because the BP has come down (& I lost a bit of weight Smile ).

With a history of kidney disease you do need to take your blood pressure seriously.
I too dislike the term "white coat" hypertension. There is good evidence that such people are at increased risk of cardiovascular disease and should be taken more seriously.
With your BP at 155/100 it certainly needs to be lowered but no-one is going to make a decision on the basis of one reading.
Your GP may wish to repeat measurements over a few weeks or, ideally, do 24 hour BP monitoring which is very simple and gives an excellent idea of what your BP is up to.
Also the lifestyle measures as described above are useful and worthwhile.
In terms of drug treatment, if it comes to that, the choice depends on a number of factors. One of the most important ones is if your kidneys are a bit leaky to protein. Again this is easily spotted by a simple urine test sent to the lab. If that showed significant amounts of protein in the urine then the best drug for you would probably be something called an ACE inhibitor which is known to have a protective effect on the kidneys in these circumstances.

elmofan · 20/01/2011 18:08

There was no change in today's reading so my GP has booked me in for next Wednesday morning to fit me with a 24 hour monitor & if that shows that my BP stays high then he said he will put me on medication .
hoomach yes i do have protein in my urine . I only have one functioning kidney but have been stable now for five years .

Thanks for all the advice

Glad he's doing better & sticking up for himself now, I can see why that would worry you still though, but bullies are generally weaklings trying to prove themselves otherwise, & really don't like picking on people who will stik up for themselves, so I expect he's turned a corner & will be okay now, he'll no doubt feel really empowered by it, which will put him in good stead for growing up & knowing how to stand up to difficult people,...... must be hard for you though :( but its unlikely you'll need to worry now....., we were lucky, after a battle DDs problem was finally expelled & the other left, thankfully she too stood up to them in the end & its really helped her come to terms with it all :)

Your kidney problem sound similar to mine, & my kidneys weren't the route cause of my high BP, initially put down to the type that can just happen on its own when we get older, though due to other health problems flaring up, they are now looking at my parathyroid

& the ACE inhibitor BP meds do help your kidneys, though I personally didn't get on well with those, eventually found 1 I do get on with & despite high BP not being meant to have any symptoms I've noticed the drug actually helps with all sorts of things, so you might be pleasantly surprised...good luck on Wed :)

elmofan · 22/01/2011 11:33

Thanks Rockinhippy - great to know things worked out well for your DD Smile .
I guess if i do get put on meds it will be a case of trial & error to get one to suit me but if it stops the constant headaches I've been having then it will be worth it .
Thanks again Smile
