Recurrent corneal erosion

My husband has had this condition for the last 8 years, although it is currently under control so long as we sleep with the window open and no central heating in our room.....

Anyway earlier today my oldest son was saying how his eye hurts and described classic RCE - ie 'when I wake up in the morning my eye really hurts when I open it and I have to shut it and rub it' etc etc He said a 'hard day' at school also makes it painful.

I am going to take him for an eye test and poss to Drs too but just wondered does anyone know if children can have this? I know I sound a bit thick but I always had the impression Dh got it only after a foreign body lodged in his eye during decorating, did not think you could be born with it? I dread DS being in as much pain as his dad was.

Thanks.

It does sound like it needs checking out. In the meantime, get some Lacrilube and apply it before they go to sleep. Get a tube each to avoid any infection.

I suffered from a few episodes of corneal erosion about 8 years ago and the pain was so bad I was seriously considering asking them to remove the affected eye Sad

I hope you manage to get the situation resolved. It's quite an easy condition to manage as long as you apply the lubricant religiously every night and get some Hypromellose drops for during the day.

Good Luck to your dh and son.

Thanks ilovemyhens

Sorry to hear about your situation but glad you sound better now?

DH certainly found it agony at the time (he's had it in both eyes at different times) It was awful to see him in pain.

Both times it has been resolved by the procedure (can't remember name) when they cut the damaged section of the eye out and bandage lense it to regrow - that was the only thing that worked.

Funnily enough sometimes the lacrolube used to be an irritant and seem to build up and make the eye gritty.

I have booked DS an eye test and will see what they say. Thanks for replying.

Okay, if the Lacrilube is too irritating, ask for some gel lubricant. It's thicker than hypromellose, but not as thick as Lacrilube. It can be used during the day as well.

Hope your ds gets on okay at his eye test. I've been left with a small scar which my optician is able to see when I go for my eye test, so they should be able to see if there's anything there.
