could be the wax if occluding the ear. Or may be infection in ear canal. Olive oil drops good to soften and break up wax, as long as no infection or perforation

LadyCodofCodford · 07/10/2005 11:37

ooh occluding sounds good

Have you ever cleaned his ears with cotton buds coddy? If so he could have a bit of cotton wool trapped in there.

I know, it happened to me and it was horrid

LadyCodofCodford · 07/10/2005 11:39

no he wont let me near it.

or you can get water trapped behind the wax. I had that and I moaned and moaned about it. you could try softening it with ear drops from the pharmacy.

LadyCodofCodford · 07/10/2005 11:51

i am hoping htats all that is

Don't try Otex - apparently they can cause more problems than they solve if ther is a lot of wax.

wax causes my ds to have ear pain (but he still seems to be able to hear ok). We have some mild drops to soften the wax. He is 2.5yo, and periodically tells us "I need ear drops" - the wax comes out of the ears easily about a day or so after administering the drops (called Waxol - not sure if you have those where you are as we are in New Zealand). But if we let the wax build up too much he definately has painful ears.

If in doubt go back to the doctor though. DH had ear problems as a kid which his mum ignored, and because it was caught too late he ended up having THIRTEEN ear operations - and his eardrums burst on SEVERAL occassions because his mum did not take him seriously when he told her his ears were painful.

We've taken ds to emergency doctors before because of ear pain. Mostly it has turned out just to be wax in the ears, but the doctors have been great and all say it is better to be safe than sorry

cod, nephew had a problem like this. He had an ear infection (with loads of wax), had antibs but then would not let ANYONE near his ear. My sister trooped him back to the GP who said there was no more infection in the ear and left it at that. A week later, he was still howling if anyone put a jumper on and it got caught on his ear so she took him back, saw a different doctor and they said he had an infection of his outer ear. Apparently, when they have an infection and the wax comes out, it can really irritate the outer ear bit as it's essentially thick, infected wax and that can be very painful. I think she got some topical stuff to put on it.

notarealdoctorfox · 11/10/2005 10:47

foxinsocks · 11/10/2005 10:57

took a while for nephew's ear to clear up - apparently, some children are prone to these things and if it doesn't clear, go back and get them to swab because all sort of nasties can cause it (like fungal or bacterial). I used to get it alot - but in our day, we called it swimmer's ear!
