Not a nice topic i know

Ds2 14 has had it on and of for years and finally seen gastro team who suspected colitus did endoscophy and colonscophy which did show some changes but not enough to confirm that and was borderline crohns

through trial and error we have found wheat makes it worse so tahst gone .He did have a 7 week course of steroids which did help but as that tailed down it came back

And the past 5 days its back with a vengence 14 times last night he refered to it as the picolax effect

only time he seen improvement was whne on steroids for his asthama .As a side issue he does have raynuards pretty badly .

Were back to gastro next week but he is wiped out and noway can send him to school.Any suggestions or advice please

Ok, saw this after Raynauds thread - does he have an IBD support nurse? If so, call her (he might not yet as tests unconfirmed). Otherwise think about going to the hospital as soon as is practical, especially if the one his GI consultant is based at has a minor injuries clinic, call NHS24/direct and they will tell you to go and have the doctors ready for you.

I'm not saying it is an emergency as such, don't want to panic you, but it sounds unlikely to improve without intervention and you will be prioritised from then on. It will also help the tests to have them done during a flare up. When my UC was getting worse, I just went to the GP and had blood tests, the hospital phoned that night and I went in straight away and couldn't believe how much the ball was rolling just because they were now seeing me at my worst.

Intolerances are all well and good, and might be exacerbating things, but you need to get to the root cause or condition, good luck. P.S. Make sure he is drinking hydration drinks.

CMOTdibbler · 18/01/2011 15:54

I'd say (in my lay, but coeliac opinion), that a month isn't long enough for any healing to occur - it takes a few months to get anywhere, especially as it takes a good 6 weeks to get the hang of really getting gf. Most people need to do dairy free too at least to begin with.

I have a few friends who are gf to control crohns or colitis, and it has really made a difference to them

Cmot

we found G/f pretty easy to get into as in so used to Reading labels due to other allergies in my dc

it was not perfect by any means but we had noticed a differeance when stopped and then when we restarted gluten

Runner

know we don't have nurse .his GI team are based at addenbrooks in Cambridge there the nearest Gi team to us no one locally. In in east Herts I have called the Gi team today and was told the Gi nurse call us back but no call.I will be on the phone first thing tomorrow

ds2 does have appontment week this Thursday but don't want to leave really that long no way can go to school .

He has tried to eat Dinner and about 5 mins in needed a poo seems worse when ever he eats just runs right through him. Hence why turns out he is not eating at school

Ekk at removing dairy to he eats a lot of it use it to bulk. Up the calories he needs to maintain his weight .Don't think want to remove dairy to without dietician support .ds is around 5,10 but 7 stone so looks horribile

TMI question but how do his stools look?

My DS1 is Pancreatic insufficiant and he doesn't difest fat or vitamins, he gets chronic diorreah if he isn't on his medication. The biggest sign is greasy stools.

Also in the mean time can you get him so probiotic drinks to keep his gut flora freash and some lucozade to keep his energy levels up.

goingroundthebend4 · 18/01/2011 18:31

dont know if you seen the Bristol poo chart but he is between a6 and a 7 with 7 being pure liquid .And the smell well no and mean none goe sin after him for a long time can smell outsid ethe bathroom and makes you want to vomit

He also passes a jelly like mucus as well.yes have got him some lucozade today but think hes going to be of school to next week

sounds awful roundthebend :(
I agree with Titsalina, it could be low liver/pancreas enzymes (my ds' pancreas enzymes were also low when we started gfree), this means he is unable to absorb fats so it all slides out
Have a look at the link I posted on yr Reynauds post, they do suggest probiotics and digestive enzymes to support the gut function and absorption. Thing is you need to go slowly as his gut is struggling.
Good luck tomorrow.

I didn't see this either,

I'm glad they are being thorough, & hopefully if they see him during a flare, they'll be able to pin point for sure this time as to whether or not its Chrohns & treat accordingly....DDs Gastro said they can't unless during a flare, hence why she has a "probable" IBS Diagnosis, due to A&E diagnosing collitis when they saw her during a flare up

I was originally DX with Chrohns myself, but mix up at the hospital Due to Gastro retiring, meant lost results, & re testing which came back clear so labelled it as IBS insteadConfused The GF diet didn't help me, but like my own DD I do know cutting out wheat & Diary if having symptoms helps due to them being hard to digest foods.

Dietitian & Gastro we saw both agreed that the Rice, a little fish & tumeric diet I put DD on for a few days was the best thing to do to stop the diareah, as white Rice is the best none irritant bulking food, Tumeric is used in Asia as a stomach medicine, & is in curries to protect the gut against the bugs that form more easily in such hot countries

So I would highly recommend feeding him that for a few days, along with electrolyte powders such as Diarylite if he'll take them,,,if not Coke & Crisps contain the sodium, pottassium & Glucose etc that are in the Salts....... dehydration due to lost tissue salts & therefore electolyte imbalance actually cause Diareah .....hence why "travellers Diareah" can often be down to dehydration.

We also swear by VIRIDIAN Gut Flora Powders,

& if he's big enough I can personally recommend a herbal supplement "Cats Claw" it helps heal a "leaky Gut" imflamation etc etc, brilliant stuff, sorted my problems out completely, but sadly not suitable for Kids, though at 14 he may well be big enough??

Also Spirulina as mentioned with a link on the Raynauds thread, it also contains natural enzymes, which aid digestion etc, along with more digestible iron than liver etc etc

Also, has he been checked for Pernicious Aneamia???.B12 deficiency....that might be another avenue to look down, as it involved the gut, various forms of it though, some where the gut doesn't produce the need intrinsic factor to digest the B12, & it is notoriously hard to diagnose in some people...lot of it in mine & DHs families, so I've still not ruled this one out for us as my side have the Hereditary form. Spirulina can help with this too, my SIL swears by it for her PA

I hope you get to the bottom of it & get him some proper help real soon, I know too well from my own DD how distressing it is to watch them go through it & feel so powerless to help :( so I really do feel for you

rockinhippy · 19/01/2011 11:04

Also a good friend who does have Chrons DX, had fantastic results with Aloe Vera

goingroundthebend4 · 21/01/2011 18:04

Well ds was seen and gastro was shocked by weight loss and pain ds been having we go in next week for colonscophy but he's said that we should be expecting a crohns dx and very much likely a coealic dx to

Has given us loads of info on crohns and it dies fit ds
