if you've not already done so, I would recommend getting him checked out by your Doctor, just to make sure theres no underlying health cause,

but Raynauds can be a problem in its own right & it can also be a sign of dietary deficiency, upping his intake of Magnesium.....often a VERY commonly deficient mineral due to out modern western diets, & less of it in the soil than there used to be, ......this one is easy to deal with, ....add 2 cups of Epsom Salts to his bath & let him play in it for at least 20 minutes....it will soak in through his Skin.(proven medically to be a very efficient way of upping your bodies magnesium) ..if you want more info google "the "Epsom Salts Council"

Fish oils are also meant to be very good for easing symptoms, so if he's not eating a lot of good oily types of fish, such as Salmon, Sardines, Mackeral etc, you might want to look into a good fish oil supplement, theres lots aimed at kids these days

I get Raynauds & if bad, which his sounds like...it can be pretty painful, so I don't envy your poor DS, thankfully mine didn't start until I was 19, & I can vouch for the above being a big help

rockinhippy · 18/01/2011 11:02

just realised I forgot....B3 is another Vitamin that can help ease symptoms & can cause it if deficient ......might be worth asking your GP for a blood test to check for deficiencies, if he;s not a fussy eater & you are confident you feed him a good diet, then it might be worth asking to see a Kiddies Gastro Doctor, to rule out any absorbtion problems (rare though, so don't panic) they can also pass you on to a Dietitian, who can advise on how to help him

I saw one recently with my own DD (who has stomach problems & very occasionally gets Raynauds too as a result) I'm considered to be pretty knowledgeable nutrition wise, but even I learnt a few useful tips from her :)

goingroundthebend4 · 18/01/2011 12:23

thank you

Ds is under gastro for queary crohns as he ha shuge problems with Diarrhea and putting on weight,

Defintley not a fussy eater east anything and everything other han wheat based as we know makes his Diarrhea worse,

sorry i should have added that ds2 is 14

Exactly the same as my own DD then.....she's ended up with a diagnosis of IBS, but Doctor said still possible Crohns as they can't diagnose that unless they see her for test during a flare

thankfully we mostly have it under control with diet (shes very sensitive to chemical additives & lactose) & changing to the more unhealthy white bread & other stodgy foods during bouts of diareah.......dietitian surprised me by saying Apple juice is the worst for aggravating diareah though....not orange as I'd always thought

You might want to look into trying him with Spirulina..........its a superfood you can buy in compressed pill form, safe for Kids...DD(8) has been taking it since 5 & has it cut up & it REALLY turned her health around, its packed full of vitamins, minerals & iron, as well as enzymes that help digestion & boost immunity, at 14 he should be fine taking it whole, I give her 3 if struggling, & 1 otherwise

goingroundthebend4 · 18/01/2011 13:03

bread is on the no way list one bit and he is in loo for hours .Ds is on high fat/calourie diet as is very very slender.Only real improvements ever comes when on high steroid dose for astham

will look into Spirulina as well thank you

Roundthebend, if you feel up to diet trial then cut out wheat for a month or so - and you could well be amazed. That's b/c the symptoms you mention just scream gluten overload. Not sure what you mean by high calorie diet, do you mean high carb? Coz gluten stops absorption of fat (& fat-soluble vits), so that makes sense, but wheat/gluten prevents absorption.
Pity drs just leave you waiting for things to get worse, coz there are quite a few symptoms that are linked to gluten intolerance, inc deficiencies, anaemia, paleness, IBS ....
If I were you, I'd research his symptoms in connection with gluten - this is what I did for my ds and I was blown away by improvement despite seriously gloomy prognosis.

goingroundthebend4 · 18/01/2011 15:37

hi ds2 is already gluten free as we know it aggravates the Diarrhea .We did diet trail with hospital backing for his bowel problems and we did see some improvement then readded it and even ds wa slike woah im staying of it .

But he seems to be having major flare up of both

Ds is on high carbs.high fat and high protein

Have you told his GI consultant - if he is (and it really sounds like he is based on the Crohns testing and steroid improvement) having autoimmune problems, then this is a related condition. Once he gets his immune system and therefore bowel, under control you should notice improvement in his circulation as well. Don't think that it isn't bowel related, so GI doesn't need to know, it really is associated and they will be able to help.

It must be so hard for you, autoimmune things can feel a bit like "it never rains, but it pours" as so many things seem to go wrong at once - but the drugs work like a kind of umbrella and you see them all getting better at once as well. Good luck, hope you get things sorted soon, 14 is such a young and difficult age to go through this.

rockinhippy · 18/01/2011 15:44

Weird, your reply wasn't there when I posted the link Confused I've had that happen on a couple of other threads tely latooConfused

any white as opposed to Wholegrain Carbs then goingroundthebend ...white rice is apparently the best for bulking & helping stop diareah, confirmed by dietitian too...

the last really bad session we had with DD (due to additives in medicinesAngry went on for weeks & she was wasting away in front of me :(, nothing I did seemed to do much good, & no help from the Drs......I ended up feeding her a little fish mixed into white rice cooked in Tumeric (spice used medicinally in Asia) & nothing else for 2 days, but it worked brilliantly

nightcat you are right of course, wheat (& gluten in general) CAN be a culprit, as can diary, but not always, its something I've looked into thoroughly, & DD is okay with both, but during times she is has flare ups it will make it worse, as its much harder to digest (as is meat but DD won't eat that anyway) & her gut is already struggling....other times she can eat both without any problems at all, & that can be long term....but additives, lactose & stress are another matter all together :(

goingroundthebend4 · 18/01/2011 15:44

i have calle dthem today ther emeant to be calling me back but not done it yet luckily we have appoinment week Thursday to see them and cant complain they been really good so far

Autoimmune would make sense as w eknow his immune system goe sinto overdrive did with his asthma .He had blood counts where his allery resnponses in bloods was 10 thousand plus 1000 is considered really high

autoimmune is something that im worrying about. The only good thing is that ds2 is a sensiable teen so understands why no gluten to wear gloves etc but im finding it hard when i dont have any answers for him

tbh I would seriously limit carbs as these make his insuline high so he is hungry but not getting much nutrition from carbs and also feeding the carb-loving bacteria & yeast.
I'd say you need to go lo-carb (smaller portions of rice or potatoes), add quality proteins at every meal and varied veg. It's the proteins and fats that actually fill you up.

Until my ds went gf he was skin and bone, our tests were inconclusive but as there was nothing else on the horizon we went gf. First attempt was for 3 days, I was so naive that I thought it would make a difference, well, it didn't. Next time it was like-forever, it's 5+ years now.
It takes months to get it out of the system (and you need to avoid slipping), then he would start rebuilding his health. But it's also one of these occasions when it can get worse before it gets better as he needs to clear it out, like a detox.
There is a v good book that explains why just going gf is not enough, you need to consider probiotics, some supplements like vit B & Zinc but most of all really nutritious food.
Book is called Gut and Psychology Syndrome by Dr Natasha Campbell-McBride.

nightcat · 18/01/2011 16:02

Many autoimmune conditions are also related to gluten (& dairy), the process is called molecular mimicry. Body tried to reject gluten protein, but in the process is destroying parts of itself, that's why it's really important to avoid contamination.

Rockin, hmm, I may have been where you are once, my ds was self-restricted vegeterian (I since found out that gluten suppreses digestive enzymes so he wasn't able to digest meat as his stomach enzymes were deficient). 5 years on, he eats meat and I also found out that there are a number of nutrients that have to be supplemented if vegeterian or they become deficient. We didn't supplement, he was tested 2 years into gf and found to have numerous deficiencies. There are a number of nutrients that we cannot absorb from veg/fruit - or we would have to eat a lot more of them to be able to get equiv amount.

rockinhippy · 18/01/2011 16:43

Interesting stuff nightcat & yes GF is something I have looked into & followed myself for years with my own health problems, sadly it didn't help at all though :(.... but I know it can for some, so if you haven't had your DS tested for coelic (sp) etc goingroundthebend4 then I too think its a good idea, though I'd be surprised if the haven't, as it was one of the first thinks they tested DD for

& no nightcat my DD won't eat meat for ethical reasons, she's never eaten it & refuses point blank as she thinks ir cruel, we don't eat it either, DH never has, & I have at times, so I'm fine with that, (apart from when shegives me a hard time on the rare occasion I DO eat itHmm....she does eat plenty of fish & I make sure she eats foods in the right combinations to get best vit /min absorbtion, vit C with iron etc etc

goingroundthebend4 · 18/01/2011 18:03

Ds eats rice ,g/f pasta spuds meat hedge fruit Fish/meat the lot he often eats fruit over chocolate.

Out all my dc he really does eat the best .Does take multi vitamin as I like to make sure he gets extra as everything passes through him

Ds was tested for cocelic and crohns the crohns was inconclusive at the time of test was done indications might be going that way

will talk with them next week when see if not before . The hands hurt and no fun at 14 having to ask teacher to do up your shirt buttons .He ended up in the medical room with a hot drink to warm hands round to but they hurt pretty bad as feeling came back and he's pretty good with pain used to set up needle for his own infusion pump

If he only went back gf recently, this is most likely a detox reaction (when on gluten, gut is under a toxic stress, so when you stop, it will try to release accumulated toxins and also start getting rid of bacteria that fed on gluten). There is a long list of symptoms that could come with this, I quite like this page, about half-way down there is a link to candida infection where you will find a list of symptoms and remedies that are helpful (most of them are foods or vits).

When we went gf, my ds developed most of the symptoms on the list, inc rashes and twiches, headaches etc etc. He also had prolonged fungal infection, we only got rid of that after Zn supplement.
