none of my kids have ever had fillings so don't know what to to for the best

I took ds to dentist as he had been complaining of toothache on and off

the dentist saw a little brown tooth decay (I'd seen it too), but said "do you want him to get it filled, sometimes fillings don't work on baby teeth". So I didn't know what to do. The dentist said it would fall out in the next few years anyway (ds is 10 soon). but its still hurting him a bit, so should he get it filled? really don't want him to get a filling but don't want him suffering, OTOH if a filling won't work is it worth getting it done?

Our dentist puts some special fluoride stuff on in such a situation. It seems to take the pain away and apparently in some situations the tooth can heal itself (well at least that is what he said). He is a private dentist though.

Its yellow stuff that is painted on and puts a layer on the tooth/molar with decay.

Agree with the above, if its hurting him then something needs to be done, its going to fall out of course, but thinking toothache for a Child, however mild for a year or so is okay, IHMO is a bit slack of your Dentist.

The coating mentioned above can help, our Dentist has done it for DD & he is NHS, but you might want to try him first with a Pro enamel toothpaste, Sensodyne do a good one, I had a similar problem & as recommended by our Dentist that seems to have sorted it out

ds (5) has a hole in a molar, it has been filled with resin of which half has fallen out twice and it is hurting him intermittently. dh is taking him in later to see what to do.

we've got the pro enamel toothpaste too, and gum with xylitol in. it might be working actually, since before when the filling fell out he was in agony.

If it´s hurting, something needs doing!

Last time I had a filling-it was only small, no anaesthetic needed, & the dentist painted stuff on & then dried/hardened it with a light.
